Yes—Adam Fox has a credible path back into the Norris Trophy conversation, but his candidacy depends on staying healthy and sustaining elite play over a full season. The New York Rangers defenseman won the award in 2020–21 and finished as a finalist in 2022–23. He recorded 53 points in 55 games in 2025–26, then opened the Rangers’ 2026–27 home schedule with two assists. That opening-night performance is a promising sign, not evidence that an award outcome is assured.
Why Fox belongs in the conversation
Fox has already shown that he can earn serious Norris consideration. The Rangers’ 2026–27 media guide records him as the 2020–21 winner and a 2022–23 finalist. Those achievements make another run plausible; they do not guarantee that voters will place him among this season’s finalists.
His latest completed regular-season production supports the case. NHL.com lists Fox at 9 goals and 44 assists for 53 points in 55 games in 2025–26. That is just under a point per game, despite a season disrupted by injuries.
Availability is the central question
Fox’s 2025–26 season was interrupted by both upper- and lower-body injuries. He returned from an upper-body injury on Dec. 31, 2025, and was placed on long-term injured reserve with a lower-body injury on Jan. 6, 2026. The Rangers’ media guide says he returned from injured reserve on Feb. 26 after missing 13 games from Jan. 8 to Feb. 5.

The missed time matters because a Norris case needs more than high-end scoring in a limited number of appearances. Fox’s strongest route back is to remain available while continuing to contribute at an elite level. His injury history makes durability a real question, but it does not establish what his health will be for the rest of 2026–27.
What the 2026–27 opening tells us—and what it does not
The NHL’s Sept. 29, 2026 season-opening roster lists Fox with the Rangers rather than in the injured or non-roster group. In New York’s Oct. 2 home opener, a 5–1 win over Tampa Bay, he recorded two assists. It is useful early evidence that he is active and producing, but one game is too small a sample to support a season-long projection.

Rangers coach Mike Sullivan underscored Fox’s importance after his Dec. 31, 2025 return from injury: “Obviously, when ‘Foxy’s’ in our lineup, he’s a difference-maker. He’s a very difficult guy to replace on so many levels.” The remark speaks to Fox’s value to New York, not to a prediction about award voting.
What will determine whether he gets back among the Norris candidates?
Fox’s case should be judged across the season, not by a single scoring burst. A meaningful assessment would weigh:

- Availability: whether he can play consistently after missing substantial time in 2025–26.
- Offense and power-play responsibility: whether he sustains strong production while carrying a major role on the Rangers’ blue line.
- Defensive contribution: the Norris is an award for the league’s top defenseman, so points alone cannot settle the case.
- Team context: his impact should be considered alongside the Rangers’ performance and his responsibilities within their lineup.
The available season-opening evidence does not establish a current comparison with other contenders or provide detailed defensive metrics. It is therefore too early to rank Fox against the field or estimate his award chances.

Fox has the past recognition and recent production to make another Norris conversation realistic. The decisive test is whether he can stay on the ice and maintain that level across 2026–27. His two-assist home opener is an encouraging start; the season is too young to call him a finalist-level candidate with confidence.
