Yaroslav Askarov made 23 saves as the San Jose Sharks opened the 2026-27 season with a 4-3 overtime win over the Florida Panthers on October 1, 2026. Luca Cagnoni scored his first NHL goal at 3:14 of overtime to decide the game.
How the Sharks beat the Panthers
San Jose built a 3-0 lead in its season opener at SAP Center, but Florida rallied in the third period. Eetu Luostarinen scored twice, and Matthew Tkachuk tied the game 17 seconds after Luostarinen’s second goal.
In overtime, Will Smith carried the puck into Florida’s zone and passed across to Cagnoni, who scored from the left circle. It was Cagnoni’s first NHL goal in his 10th game. Smith finished with two goals and an assist, while Macklin Celebrini recorded three assists. Mason Marchment scored in his Sharks debut. The NHL recap has the game’s scoring details.
Askarov’s performance
The NHL recap credited Askarov with 23 saves. A CBS Sports/RotoWire report specifies that he stopped 23 of 26 shots. The win gave San Jose a dramatic start to its season, but one game does not determine how the Sharks will divide starts in goal.

What the win says about San Jose’s goaltending plan
Before the season, NHL.com described Askarov and Alex Nedeljkovic as options in a goaltending timeshare, with Askarov a potential No. 1 option. CBS Sports/RotoWire also suggested he could gain a slight edge in starts if he played well. Those were preseason expectations, not a settled decision about the season’s workload.
For context, NHL.com’s September 21, 2026 preview reported these 2025-26 figures: Askarov went 21-20-4 with a 3.63 goals-against average and .884 save percentage; Nedeljkovic went 18-14-4 with a 2.87 goals-against average and .896 save percentage. The Sharks’ team save percentage was .881 and their goals-against average was 3.49 that season. These are prior-season numbers from the NHL.com season preview, not statistics from the opener.
