Jayden Daniels will not play when Washington faces the Indianapolis Colts in Week 4. The Commanders announced Friday, October 2, that the quarterback was ruled out with a left-elbow injury; Marcus Mariota is set to make his second start of the season in his place.
Is Jayden Daniels playing in Week 4?
No. Washington ruled Daniels out for its Sunday, October 4, game against the Colts at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. The NFL’s Week 4 injury report also lists him as out with an elbow injury. The report lists both Indianapolis and Washington at 1–2 entering the matchup.
The Commanders’ Friday announcement gives the team’s decision and explanation; the NFL injury report records the official game designation and matchup details.
Why is Jayden Daniels out against the Colts?
The Commanders identified the injury as a dislocated left elbow. Daniels dislocated it in Washington’s Week 2 game against Dallas, according to the team.

Daniels was limited at each of Washington’s three practices during the Week 4 preparation period, but that participation did not change his game status: he was ruled out. The team also said he had spoken with multiple specialists. According to the Commanders, a brace prevents him from fully extending his left arm but does not affect his throwing motion or other on-field activity. Those brace and recovery details are the team’s account, not an independent medical assessment.
Washington had described Daniels as week-to-week on September 25 and said it would not put him on injured reserve at that time. That update did not guarantee a Week 4 return or establish a date for his return.

The Commanders have not announced a return date. Head coach Dan Quinn said the team would reassess after Daniels has a full week of practice: “We’ll assess where we are next week when he gets a full week of practice all the way through.” That describes the team’s next evaluation, not a confirmation that Daniels will play in Week 5.

Quinn also called Daniels’ limited return to the field a positive step, saying, “He had a great week,” and that it was “awesome to have him back on the field in a limited fashion.”
