On October 2, 2026, Lions coach Dan Campbell said safety Brian Branch was close to returning to practice as he continues to recover from a torn Achilles. Branch had not been confirmed as back at practice in that report. Week 7, after Detroit’s bye, was described as a more realistic target for a game return—not a confirmed date.
Is Brian Branch practicing yet?
The October 2 report said Branch could return to practice at any time, but did not say he had taken part in a practice. Campbell’s update was encouraging: “He’s close. Yep, he’s close,” he said. He added: “He’s ready to go. [I’m] tired of listening to him. So, I mean that in a good way. Man, he’s put in a ton of work, and he looks really good. He’s close.” The remarks were reported by Pride Of Detroit on October 2.
Branch is recovering from a torn Achilles suffered in early December 2025. Being eligible to return to practice is a procedural milestone, not confirmation that a player has practiced or can play in a game. An NFL.com report on September 21 described the updated reserve/PUP rule: players who start the season on reserve/PUP can return to practice after their team’s first two games. Campbell said then that Branch would not return that week.
When could Brian Branch return to a game?
The October 2 report said Branch could not play until after Detroit’s weekend game against Carolina. It pointed to Week 7 against Green Bay, following the Lions’ bye, as a more realistic game-return target. That was a projection in the report, not an announced schedule or confirmed activation date. A return to practice and availability for a game are separate steps; neither should be inferred from the other.
