The Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek crossover is a forthcoming Universes Beyond set celebrating Star Trek’s 60th anniversary, with a global tabletop release scheduled for November 13, 2026. It draws on six decades of the franchise and uses mechanics built around exploration, gradual ship development, and consequential choices—not just familiar characters on cards. Principal game designer Gavin Verhey discussed those design challenges in interviews with Wargamer and GamesMarket.

When does the MTG Star Trek set come out?

Wizards of the Coast lists November 13, 2026, as the set’s global tabletop release date. The crossover is timed to Star Trek’s 60th anniversary and brings characters and moments from across the franchise’s television and film history into Magic. Wizards’ product overview has the announced product details; StarTrek.com’s announcement describes it as a tribute spanning six decades of storytelling.

The release is forthcoming as of October 3, 2026. Preorders and published MSRPs are not guarantees of stock or the price a retailer will charge, so check current listings before buying.

How did the designers make Star Trek work in Magic?

Star Trek often centers on exploration, problem-solving, and moral dilemmas, while Magic’s basic structure makes combat a central way to win. Verhey, Wizards’ principal game designer and the Star Trek set’s design lead, said he began working on it in 2022. In a Wargamer interview, he described the tension directly: “The trick is that Star Trek is a lot more about dilemmas and exploration, and a lot less about fighting. Fighting does happen – you have your starships shooting at each other and quarrels down on the land, don’t get me wrong – but Magic is a game about attacking for two and removing your opponents creatures, so how do we make that work in a Star Trek setting?”

The announced mechanics respond by encouraging a slower build toward powerful moments, with land diversity and decisions playing a larger role. They evoke elements of the franchise through how cards function, rather than relying only on their names and artwork.

Spacecraft build up over time

Verhey told Wargamer that Spacecraft “slow and power up over time.” That gradual development gives ships a build-up before they become a major part of play, a closer fit for a story of exploration and preparation than a game plan based solely on immediate attacks.

Strange New Worlds rewards different lands

The Strange New Worlds mechanic counts the differently named lands a player controls. It encourages players to assemble a broader spread of worlds and can reward games that take longer to develop. The interview explains the design intention, but the exact effects and play decisions depend on each card’s printed text.

Dilemmas make choices matter

Dilemmas are designed to make modal choices consequential. Verhey cited Seven of Nine as an example: her card draws when its controller faces a dilemma, reflecting her drive to gather information. That links a character trait to a game action instead of treating the reference as flavor alone.

Which Commander deck should you get?

Choose by the Star Trek faction or theme you want to play: Federation Fleet, Landing Party, Klingon Fury, or We Are the Borg. Each is a ready-to-play 100-card Commander deck, so the choice is primarily about the deck’s theme and cards. The product announcement names the four decks but does not provide a full comparison of their strategies here; check the individual decklists and card details before choosing based on play style.

What collector details stand out?

Wizards says seven signed headliner cards can be found only in Collector Boosters. Each is signed by the actor who portrayed the depicted character, and Wizards estimates approximately 250 copies of each exist. That is a publisher-supplied approximate quantity, not an independently audited count. A headliner pulled from a Collector Booster in another language is still an English card.

The set also includes 30 stardates cards. Nonfoil versions appear in both Play Boosters and Collector Boosters; traditional foil versions appear only in Collector Boosters. See Wizards’ product overview for the announced distribution details.

Where is the set legal, and how do you play it?

Wizards says the main TRK set is legal in all formats. TRC cards from the Commander product and SDS stardates cards are legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage; individual cards may also be legal in formats where they were already available. For set-specific Draft and Sealed play, players use cards opened from Play Boosters. Check the card’s set symbol and official legality information for an individual card rather than assuming every card in a product has the same format permissions.

The announced product overview says a Beginner Box was canceled and removes its details; it should not be treated as part of the available lineup.

How the crossover fits Star Trek’s 60th anniversary

StarTrek.com describes the set as bringing characters and moments from The Original Series through later series and films into Magic. The same publisher’s 60th-anniversary guide also mentions a separate Star Trek Timelines book from DK Publishing, due November 17, 2026. That book is an adjacent franchise reference, not part of the Magic set.
