Rayo Vallecano coach Beñat San José said Iván Balliu had a “battered ankle” after a heavy tackle against Racing, and was trying to be ready for the following Saturday’s match against Real Madrid. That was a short-term availability update reported on 11 September 2026—not confirmation that Balliu would play, nor a medical diagnosis.
What happened to Iván Balliu’s ankle?
In a report dated 11 September 2026, RotoWire attributed the update to Rayo coach Beñat San José. San José said Balliu had taken a heavy tackle against Racing and described his ankle as battered. RotoWire quoted him saying: “Ivan was on the receiving end of a very heavy tackle against Racing and has a battered ankle, but he is a very gritty player and is doing everything he can to be ready in time.” RotoWire’s report
“Battered ankle” is a general description of discomfort, not a clinical diagnosis. The report does not identify a sprain, fracture, ligament injury, or other specific condition.
Was Balliu expected to play against Real Madrid?
The coach’s update said Balliu was doing what he could to be ready for the following Saturday’s match against Real Madrid. It described an attempt to become available, not a confirmed selection or assurance that he would play. Because the report was published on 11 September, it should not be treated as a current fitness update on 3 October 2026.

Has Rayo confirmed a diagnosis or return date?
