To detect a lightbox, look for a panel displayed over page content, then inspect that panel in your browser’s developer tools and test what happens to focus, the background, and Escape-key dismissal. A lightbox may be a native HTML <dialog> or a custom overlay; appearance, a class name, or a high z-index alone cannot identify it conclusively.

What counts as a lightbox?

“Lightbox” is a visual and behavioral description, not a single required HTML element. It commonly refers to a panel shown above the page’s main content, often with a backdrop that dims or obscures the page behind it. Related terms include modal and dialog, but the terms are not interchangeable in every implementation. A dialog can be modal or non-modal, and a positioned panel can look like a lightbox without preventing interaction with the rest of the page.

For a reliable identification, record three kinds of evidence separately: what the panel looks like, what its DOM and accessibility information show, and how it behaves when you use the keyboard or try to interact with the page behind it.

How to inspect a suspected lightbox

  1. Make the panel appear. Load the page and wait, or perform the action that opens the suspected panel. Note whether it overlays the viewport or only a local component, and whether the URL or visible page state changes.
  2. Open the browser’s element picker. In Chrome DevTools, activate Inspect mode from the DevTools action bar. Chrome documents Ctrl+Shift+C on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS, or Cmd+Option+C on macOS. See Chrome’s Inspect mode guide.
  3. Select the panel itself. Inspect the selected DOM node and its parents. Look for an open <dialog>, dialog semantics such as role="dialog", a label or accessible name, and markup that belongs to the panel. A custom overlay may use ordinary elements, so the absence of a dialog tag or role does not rule out a lightbox-like interface.
  4. Examine its styles and structure. In the Elements and Styles panels, check dimensions, positioning, and whether there is a separate backdrop or overlay element. Fixed or viewport-relative positioning can help explain how a custom panel covers the page, but these styles are clues rather than proof.
  5. Test the open panel with the keyboard. Observe where focus moves, whether Tab stays within the panel, whether Escape closes it, and whether controls behind it can still be used. Treat these as observations about this page, not assumptions about every lightbox.

How to tell a native dialog from a custom overlay

Native modal dialog

Find an open <dialog> and determine how it was opened. When a page calls showModal(), the browser places the dialog in the top layer, displays a ::backdrop, and makes the rest of that document inert. A modal dialog opened this way receives focus inside and closes with Escape by default. These behaviors are documented by MDN’s guide to the HTML dialog element.

A dialog opened with show() or simply given the open attribute is not equivalent to one opened with showModal(). The visible element alone does not establish that it is modal.

Custom overlay

A site can build a similar interface from ordinary elements, such as <div> elements, CSS positioning, and JavaScript handlers. It may include role="dialog" to communicate dialog semantics, but that role does not itself make the background inert, manage focus, provide an accessible name, or guarantee correct modal behavior. Check the labeling and focus behavior as well as the markup; see MDN’s ARIA dialog role reference.

Why z-index does not prove an element is a lightbox

Custom overlays often use stacking and positioning styles, but a high z-index is not a required signature. Native modal dialogs use the browser’s top layer, which sits above ordinary page stacking contexts. Chrome also lists popovers and fullscreen elements among top-layer content. Consequently, a native dialog can appear above ordinary DOM content even when that content has a higher z-index. See Chrome’s explanation of top-layer support.

How to compare two possible overlays

If a page has several floating panels, compare the same evidence for each one:

Check What to observe
Coverage Does the panel cover the viewport, or only sit within a local component?
Background behavior Can you interact with the page behind it, or is that content inert?
Implementation Is the panel an HTML <dialog> or custom markup?
Accessibility information Does it expose dialog semantics and an accessible name?
Keyboard behavior Where does focus go, can Tab leave the panel, and does Escape dismiss it?

These checks help distinguish a modal lightbox from a tooltip, dropdown, non-modal dialog, or ordinary positioned panel. No single row is decisive on its own.

What changes when the panel is inside an iframe?

A modal dialog blocks interaction within the document where it was opened, not necessarily the entire browser page. MDN notes that if a dialog is inside an iframe, the rest of the page remains interactive. If the panel appears isolated or the surrounding page still responds, check whether the selected element belongs to a frame before concluding that the modal behavior is broken.

How to describe what you found

Use precise language based on what you observed. For example: “The page displays a custom overlay with dialog semantics; Escape closes it, but the background remains interactive.” Or: “The open native dialog behaves modally in its document, with a backdrop and the rest of that document inert.” This separates visual appearance, implementation clues, and tested behavior instead of claiming more than the evidence supports.
