Home Assistant 2026.9 adds a Show map button to the Matter panel, opening a network-topology view of commissioned Matter devices. It shows how devices connect over Thread or Wi-Fi, their network roles, and the paths and signal-strength information between them. This is different from Home Assistant’s geographic location map.

How to open the Matter network map

  1. Open the Matter panel in Home Assistant.
  2. Select Show map.

The feature was announced in Home Assistant 2026.9 on September 2, 2026. If the installed Matter Server is too old to support it, Home Assistant displays a compatibility message. The release announcement does not specify a minimum Matter Server version. Home Assistant’s 2026.9 release notes

What the map shows

The view depicts the connections among commissioned Matter devices, rather than their physical locations. It distinguishes Thread and Wi-Fi links and shows the paths from Home Assistant to devices.

  • Transport: Link color identifies whether a connection uses Thread or Wi-Fi.
  • Network roles: The map differentiates routers and border routers from battery-powered end devices.
  • Connection detail: Line thickness and direction represent signal strength on each side of a connection.
  • Labels: Recognizable host names or Wi-Fi network names can identify border routers and access points.

Home Assistant’s June 2026 Matter article also discusses device roles, Thread routing hops, discovered border routers, Wi-Fi access points, and connection quality. For the map added to the Matter panel in 2026.9, however, the September release notes specify that color represents transport; do not read color as a signal-quality scale. Aqara Smart Home Hub M3 for Advanced Automation, Matter Controller, IR
  • [Multi-Protocol Hub with Matter Bridge] The M3 is a versatile hub supporting Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices. It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app. Supports advanced Matter bridge functionality, enabling Aqara-exclusive scenes and signals to sync with Matter ecosystems such as Home Assistant for seamless integration. Supports up to 127 Aqara Zigbee devices (** Not third-party Zigbee devices) and 127 Thread devices (Repeaters are needed).
  • [Edge Compatibilities and Local Automations] The M3 serves as an Edge Hub, prioritizing local control and automation. Upon integration, it supersedes existing Aqara hubs, shifting the automations among them to local operation (Some cloud-based notifications still require internet). Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
  • [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
  • [Optimal Wired and Wireless Connectivity] Offering both wired and wireless solutions, the smart home hub M3 provides dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) with advanced WPA3 security, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
  • [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.

Why the map may not appear

The compatibility of the installed Matter Server is the documented reason the map may be unavailable: an older server may not support the feature, in which case the page shows a message. The 2026.9 announcement gives no minimum version number, so check the message and your installation’s Matter Server details rather than relying on an assumed version requirement.

Is this the same as Home Assistant’s location map?

No. The Matter map is about network topology—how Matter devices communicate. The location-oriented Map card places entities, zones, and geolocation sources on a geographic map. It is useful for device trackers and location history, and mapped entities need latitude and longitude attributes. The card also supports features such as marker clustering, fitting the viewport, prior-location paths, zoom, and themes. Home Assistant Map card documentation

Wi-Fi 6 ensures smoother performance even in high-traffic environments, allowing multiple devices to connect without compromising speed or reliability. Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M100 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.

Home Assistant introduced configurable Map dashboards in 2024.4, allowing separate dashboards with different entities and configurations—for example, maps for family, cars, or pets. The release notes said existing map integrations would be migrated during the upgrade. Home Assistant 2024.4 release notes

Map tiles are another separate piece: the integration introduced in 2026.9 provides base imagery from OpenStreetMap Foundation tile servers and proxies and caches recently used tiles in memory. It supports the geographic map experience; it is not the Matter topology view. Home Assistant Map tiles documentation

Does viewing the map require extra hardware?

The feature is described as software in the Matter panel; Home Assistant does not state that additional hardware is required just to view it. If you are building a Thread network, the release article names Connect ZBT-2 as one example of Thread border-router hardware when used with the OpenThread Border Router app. That is an optional network component, not a stated prerequisite for opening the map.
