Some teachers in one longitudinal study recognized that students had unequal help at home yet still explained missing homework as a failure of effort or responsibility. The researchers argue that when students cannot do assigned work independently—and completion affects grades or rewards—those expectations can reinforce inequality. The study does not show how often this happens across schools, or that teachers generally intend to disadvantage students.
What the study found
Jessica McCrory Calarco, Ilana S. Horn, and Grace A. Chen followed about 100 students from Grade 3 to Grade 7 in one suburban public-school district. Their peer-reviewed study, first published online in Educational Researcher on July 15, 2022, used classroom observations, interviews, and student records to examine elementary and middle-school mathematics homework. The authors caution that the district’s demographics and local practices limit how far the findings can be generalized. Read the study in Educational Researcher.
The researchers describe a tension: teachers acknowledged that students had different levels of support at home, but often interpreted homework gaps in terms of students’ or parents’ effort, responsibility, and motivation. At the same time, some assignments were difficult for students to complete on their own. In the classrooms studied, homework completion could affect grades or rewards, while missing work could bring reprimands or penalties. The authors argue that this combination can reproduce existing inequalities; they do not claim that every teacher consciously set out to disadvantage students.
How unequal help at home can shape homework
The paper uses pseudonyms to illustrate differences in family support. Gina, a fifth grader, had a mother who described re-explaining math in a way that made sense to her daughter. Jesse, a classmate, had a mother who said she struggled to help with fifth-grade math because of her own difficult school experience. The contrast shows how access to homework help can differ between families; it is not a representative comparison of all parents or students.

One fourth-grade teacher, Mr. Cherlin, described a “lower-income pocket” where he perceived less support at home. He said: “If they don’t have the support at home, there’s only so far I can take them. If they’re not gonna go home and do their homework, there’s just not much I can do.” In the authors’ analysis, the significance is not simply that teachers noticed resource differences. It is that those differences could be acknowledged while responsibility for completing work remained with students and families.
Why the authors say these practices can reinforce inequality
If an assignment depends on an adult’s time, confidence, or math knowledge, students with less access to that help may be less able to complete it. When teachers then treat missing work primarily as a motivation or responsibility problem, the resulting grade or penalty can reflect unequal support as well as a student’s understanding. The study documents this kind of mismatch between recognizing uneven home resources and continuing to assign work some students could not complete independently.

This is an argument about how expectations and classroom practices may sustain unequal outcomes—not evidence that teachers universally abandon struggling students. Nor does the study provide a population estimate for how often teachers give up on students who miss homework.

- Can students complete the assignment independently? Check whether success requires help, materials, or expertise that may not be available at home.
- Can students get help during the school day? Consider whether access to support depends mainly on family time and knowledge.
- What does grading reward? Distinguish evidence of learning from completion when completion may depend on unequal help.
- What happens when work is missing? Review whether the response identifies a barrier and offers support, or mainly reprimands or penalizes the student.
These are evidence-grounded review questions, not interventions whose effectiveness the study measured.

The findings come from qualitative work with one cohort in one district, using observations, interviews, and records over time. They offer a detailed account of how teachers’ explanations and homework practices can interact with unequal family resources. They cannot establish how common these patterns are nationally, compare districts, or prove that a particular support strategy improves homework completion or student outcomes. Calarco and Horn’s explanatory article in The Conversation gives additional context to the study.
