Nike’s latest results show a turnaround that is still uneven: revenue fell in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, its full-year outlook calls for a high-single-digit decline, and digital sales remained weak. “FY2028” is a useful framing for how long recovery may take, but Nike’s published fiscal 2027 outlook does not set a specific FY2028 turnaround target or completion date.

What Nike’s latest results say about the turnaround

Nike reported $11.2 billion in revenue for fiscal 2027’s first quarter, ended August 31, 2026. Revenue declined 4% on a reported basis and 5% currency-neutral. Nike defines currency-neutral measures as non-GAAP; they adjust for foreign-exchange effects and should not be confused with reported revenue. NIKE Brand revenue fell 4%. North America grew, partly offsetting declines in Greater China and EMEA. Nike’s fiscal 2027 first-quarter results do not describe a completed recovery.

Direct and digital sales remain pressure points

NIKE Direct revenue was $4.1 billion, down 8% reported and 9% currency-neutral. NIKE Brand Digital sales decreased 13%. Those declines indicate that the company’s owned-channel business was still contracting even as performance varied by geography. The quarter’s gross margin rose 60 basis points to 42.8%, primarily because warehousing and logistics costs were lower; that improvement does not erase the weaker top-line results.

Why FY2028 is a framing, not a Nike deadline

The official first-quarter release sets Nike’s fiscal 2027 revenue outlook at a high-single-digit decline. It does not state a fiscal 2028 recovery target or promise that the turnaround will be complete by then. The title’s FY2028 timing should therefore be read as an assessment of how extended the repair may be, not as company guidance.

That distinction matters because turnaround timelines are uncertain. Nike says portfolio actions can weigh on revenue and profitability before any hoped-for longer-term brand momentum emerges. The company’s strategy is to lead with sport, develop innovative products, strengthen consumer connections, and improve digital and retail experiences; those are stated aims, not proof that results have already turned. Nike’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K provides the company’s account of its strategy and market-specific challenges.

How the first-quarter trend compares with fiscal 2026

The fiscal 2026 baseline was mixed rather than a clear growth rebound. Nike reported full-year revenue of $46.4 billion, flat year over year on a reported basis and down 2% currency-neutral. NIKE Direct revenue was $17.7 billion, down 6% reported and 8% currency-neutral, primarily due to decreased traffic.

Recovery is different by region and brand

North America has progressed further

Nike’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K says North America had made the most progress on portfolio actions. In the latest quarter, North America growth helped offset declines elsewhere. This contrast suggests the turnaround is not moving at a uniform pace across the business.

Greater China remains a significant challenge

Nike identified declining store traffic, elevated promotions, and higher marketplace inventory in Greater China as pressures on revenue and profitability. The company expected negative impacts from Greater China through fiscal 2027. These factors help explain why a broad recovery cannot be inferred from performance in one market.

EMEA and Converse add to the uneven picture

EMEA revenue declined in fiscal 2027 Q1. Nike also said Converse would take longer to recover and expected negative Converse impacts through fiscal 2027. Converse is a separate brand from NIKE Brand, so its trajectory should not be conflated with the regional performance of the NIKE Brand.

What Nike’s Pace changes are intended to do

Nike describes Pace as an effort to scale its Sport Offense and change how the company operates. The initiative covers global supply-chain modernization, a new India campus, a realignment to three geographies, and further organizational streamlining. Nike estimates cumulative savings of $2.5 billion through fiscal 2031 and expects $1.0 billion in pre-tax charges through fiscal 2031, in addition to about $0.3 billion of severance recognized in fiscal 2026. These are company estimates and charges, not savings already demonstrated in results; outcomes depend on assumptions and implementation.

Cost changes may support productivity, but they are not the same as renewed demand. A reader assessing the turnaround should distinguish operating-model changes from evidence of stronger sales, healthier channels, or sustained profitability.

Separate recurring performance from unusual benefits

Fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter results included a substantial tariff-recovery effect. Nike reported gross margin of 49.2%, up 890 basis points, including an approximately 900-basis-point benefit from the expected recovery of IEEPA tariffs. The expected recovery also contributed $0.52 to Q4 diluted earnings per share. Nike’s Form 10-K reports a $986 million fiscal 2026 IEEPA tariff recovery benefit. Those figures should not be read as recurring operating improvement.

The fiscal 2027 Q1 gross-margin increase had a different stated driver: lower warehousing and logistics costs. Keeping the periods and causes separate avoids treating the prior-year tariff effect as evidence that underlying margins have permanently improved.

How to judge whether the turnaround is improving

  • Check whether revenue is growing on a reported basis, and keep currency-neutral comparisons clearly labeled.
  • Compare wholesale with NIKE Direct, then look separately at Direct stores and digital sales.
  • Track North America alongside Greater China and EMEA, and treat Converse as a separate brand.
  • Read margin and earnings changes alongside any unusual benefits, including tariff recoveries.
  • Distinguish estimated future savings and restructuring charges from realized results.

CEO Elliott Hill said in Nike’s June 30, 2026 full-year results release that the company continued to face top-line headwinds, while citing progress in performance product and a focus on execution and profitability. CFO Dave Denton’s Q1 statement similarly emphasized portfolio health, productivity, and disciplined resource allocation. These comments describe management priorities; the sales and cost figures above show the evidence available in the reported periods.

This is business reporting context, not a forecast of Nike’s stock performance.
