It is possible, but the 87% figure is not a forecast that NIO shares will rise by that amount—or a measure of the odds that they will. It is a snapshot calculation based on analyst price targets and a share price that changes over time. NIO’s latest reported results show strong year-over-year growth and much-improved margins, but the company still had a GAAP net loss, delivery growth slowed in Q3, and some brokerages have cut their targets. The evidence supports a plausible recovery case, not a conclusion that the average target is likely to be reached.
The title’s separate claim that NIO stock is down 57% in a year cannot be verified from the available dated price data: no precise start and end dates or matching price series are established here.
What the 87% analyst-target upside means
StockAnalysis showed a $6.30 average target from 24 analysts polled by S&P Global, with implied upside of 86.94%, a low target of $3.91 and a high of $10.11. Its page said it was last checked on September 29, 2026. The 86.94% is the difference between the average target and the share-price reference used by that tracker at that snapshot; it is not a return forecast issued by NIO.
Investing.com showed a $6.305 average target from 24 analysts and 85.44% implied upside when its page was opened. A search-result snapshot for that page had shown 87.11%. Those differences illustrate why the headline percentage should be tied to a provider and capture time. The target, the reference price, and potentially the analysts included can change.

Analyst price targets are estimates, not promises or independently established probabilities. An average also does not mean every analyst expects the same outcome: StockAnalysis’s September 29 snapshot ranged from $3.91 to $10.11. No published probability of NIO reaching the consensus target is established by these figures.
What NIO’s operating results say about a recovery
Q2 2026: stronger sales and improved margins
In results released September 1, 2026, NIO reported 107,658 vehicle deliveries in Q2, up 49.4% year over year. Revenue rose 69.1% to RMB32,136.9 million, while vehicle sales revenue increased 80.1% to RMB29,058.2 million. The company attributed vehicle-sales revenue growth to higher delivery volume and a higher average selling price as product mix changed.

Margins were markedly better than a year earlier. Q2 gross margin was 18.4%, compared with 10.0% in Q2 2025; vehicle margin was 18.5%, compared with 10.3%. Both measures were slightly below Q1 2026, when gross margin was 19.0% and vehicle margin was 18.8%. Q2 gross profit was RMB5,906.5 million.
Growth continued in Q3, but at a slower rate
NIO’s October 1, 2026 delivery update reported 109,178 vehicles delivered in Q3, up 25.4% year over year. That compares with Q2’s 49.4% year-over-year growth rate: deliveries kept increasing, but the growth rate slowed. September deliveries were 37,408, up 7.7% year over year.

The Q2 release had forecast Q3 deliveries of 108,000–111,000 and revenue of RMB33.285–34.051 billion. The later update put deliveries within that forecast range, but did not report actual Q3 revenue. The revenue range therefore remains guidance, not a realized result.
Positive adjusted earnings are not GAAP profitability
NIO reported a Q2 GAAP net loss of RMB528.0 million and a loss from operations of RMB347.2 million. On an adjusted, non-GAAP basis, it reported net profit of RMB26.1 million and operating profit of RMB206.9 million. Those are different accounting measures; the adjusted figures do not erase the GAAP loss.

As of June 30, 2026, NIO reported RMB56.7 billion in cash, cash equivalents, restricted cash, short-term investments and long-term time deposits, and said it had net current assets. That liquidity is relevant to the company’s capacity to fund operations, but it does not by itself establish future profitability or the share price.

The consensus snapshot sits alongside more cautious individual opinions reported in September 2026. Investing.com reported that J.P. Morgan downgraded NIO from Overweight to Neutral and cut its target from $7 to $4.50. The report cited sluggish Chinese passenger-vehicle demand, price competition and limited overseas exposure; it said the firm expected Chinese passenger-vehicle demand to be flat to down 5% in 2027 and had lowered earnings expectations.

Investing.com also reported that Bernstein reduced its target from $6 to $5 while maintaining Market Perform, citing weaker delivery momentum, particularly at ONVO. These are brokerage views relayed in secondary reporting, not company guidance or a unified analyst consensus. They show that the bullish average does not capture every analyst’s assumptions.
When comparing targets, look beyond the headline number. The useful questions are:
- Timing and reference price: When was the target set, and what share price was used to calculate its implied upside?
- Market assumptions: What does the analyst expect for Chinese EV demand, price competition and overseas sales?
- Brand and model execution: How are delivery assumptions for NIO, ONVO and FIREFLY treated, and what product-launch execution is assumed?
- Profitability: Does the analysis rely on GAAP results or adjusted measures, and does it expect margins to improve?
- Financial resilience: How does the view account for liquidity and cash flow?
What would make the target more or less attainable?
The recovery case has real operating evidence behind it: Q2 deliveries and revenue rose sharply year over year, margins were far higher than in Q2 2025, and Q3 deliveries landed inside the company’s earlier delivery guidance. If NIO can sustain demand, protect margins amid competition and convert growth into durable earnings, a higher valuation—and therefore a move toward the analyst average—could be supported.
The countercase is also material. Q3 delivery growth was slower than Q2’s, Q2 remained loss-making under GAAP, and the cited brokerages raised concerns about demand, competition and delivery momentum. The Q3 delivery update alone cannot establish whether revenue or profitability improved. These factors could weigh on analyst assumptions and valuations, even if vehicle deliveries continue to grow.

Yes, in the sense that the operating trajectory and valuation could improve enough for shares to reach it. But the available evidence does not show that this outcome is likely, and the 87% calculation should not be read as a probability or expected return. Treat it as a time-sensitive comparison between a particular consensus target and a particular reference share price.
