Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf an MCP server is not working in Cursor, start with View → Output → MCP Logs to see whether it failed to start, connect, authenticate, or return tools. Then check the server’s enablement and configuration before changing network settings or removing it. Cursor’s logs and CLI let you diagnose the affected server without resetting unrelated integrations.
1. Read the MCP logs first
Open Cursor’s Output panel and choose MCP Logs. The logs can show initialization, tool calls, and errors, helping distinguish a startup failure from a connection, authentication, or tool-call problem. See Cursor’s MCP documentation and MCP integrations guide for the current interface details.
On Windows and Linux, Cursor’s integrations guide lists Ctrl + Shift + U for opening the Output panel. On macOS, use the menu or panel rather than relying on a shortcut that may vary. Note the first relevant error and the server name before changing settings. Do not share logs or screenshots containing access tokens or other secrets.
2. Make sure the server is enabled
In the editor, open Customize → MCPs and check that the server’s toggle is on. A disabled server will not load for chat. The Cursor CLI MCP reference also documents these commands:

agent mcp list— view configured servers and their status.agent mcp enable <identifier>— enable a server by its identifier.
Use the identifier shown by Cursor, rather than assuming it matches the server’s display name.
3. Confirm Cursor is using the configuration you edited
Cursor supports project-level and global MCP configuration. If a server appears in one workspace but not another, check that you changed the intended mcp.json and scope. Cursor’s CLI follows the editor’s configuration precedence; its MCP commands can help show which configuration source is in effect.
Do not copy a project’s configuration into the global file—or the reverse—without checking which scope the workspace is using. The configuration and precedence details are in Cursor’s MCP reference and CLI documentation.

4. Check the command or endpoint and transport
Compare the server entry with the provider’s setup instructions. The right checks depend on how the server connects:
| Connection type | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Local stdio | The command exists on the machine running Cursor, the arguments are correct, and the process can start in Cursor’s environment. |
| Remote HTTP or SSE | The URL is correct and reachable, the selected transport matches the server, and any required headers are present. |
Cursor’s MCP reference describes stdio, HTTP, and SSE transports. A local command problem and a remote endpoint problem have different causes, so use the log error to decide which side to investigate.
5. Verify environment variables and authentication
A server may fail even with a correct command if Cursor cannot see a required environment variable or credential. Cursor advises ensuring shell-profile variables are available to the app and restarting Cursor after changing the shell profile. If the server uses OAuth, confirm the authorization flow completed.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Check that each required variable is available to Cursor, not only to a terminal opened with a different environment.
- Keep secrets in environment variables where appropriate; do not paste tokens into shared logs, screenshots, or configuration committed to a public repository.
- Use credentials with only the permissions the server needs, and review the server code before granting access to sensitive systems.
Cursor’s setup and security guidance is in its integrations guide and MCP reference.
6. Check whether the expected tool is available
A server showing as connected does not prove that the specific tool you need was discovered or enabled. Inspect the tool list separately:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- In the chat interface, open the available tools list and check for the expected tool. If the interface offers per-tool controls, confirm that tool is enabled for the current interaction.
- Or run
agent mcp list-tools <identifier>to inspect the server’s tool names and requirements.
If the server is connected but the tool is absent, check the server’s own setup and tool requirements rather than repeatedly changing unrelated network settings. Cursor documents tool listing in its CLI MCP reference.

- 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports
7. Use network fixes only when the symptoms point to a network issue
For Cursor connectivity problems, open Cursor Settings → Network → Run Diagnostics. If a corporate proxy blocks HTTP/2 streaming, Cursor recommends setting HTTP Compatibility Mode to HTTP/1.1 and then restarting Cursor. This is a targeted proxy workaround, not a general fix for every MCP failure.
If logs indicate VPN-related DNS errors, fully restart Cursor after reconnecting to the VPN. If the errors persist, check the operating system’s DNS resolver. Cursor’s guidance for diagnostics, proxies, VPN/DNS, and firewalls is in its network and remote connections guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. If you use Remote SSH, check the local and remote sides
Cursor says AI requests originate from the local machine while the remote host provides file access. For an MCP issue during a Remote SSH session, check local internet access as well as remote CPU and memory pressure and SSH stability. A server or session problem on one side can look like an MCP problem in the editor.

After reconnecting a dropped SSH session, restart Cursor: stale processes may remain after the session has ended. Follow Cursor’s Remote SSH and network guidance for connection-specific troubleshooting.
9. Update or re-add the server only after checking the error
If the logs and configuration checks point to a broken server setup, Cursor recommends removing and re-adding the server. For an npm-based server, Cursor’s MCP reference describes removing it, clearing npm’s cache, and adding it again. For a custom server, update its files locally and restart Cursor.
Before removing anything, record the error and preserve configuration you still need. A reset may erase settings without addressing a bad endpoint, missing credential, or network block. Cursor’s instructions are in the integrations guide and MCP reference.
How to narrow down the cause
These distinctions help keep troubleshooting focused:
- Local stdio versus remote HTTP/SSE: a local launch failure points toward the executable, arguments, or environment; a remote failure points toward the endpoint, headers, transport, or network.
- Project versus global configuration: a server missing only in one workspace may be configured at a different scope than the one you edited.
- Connection versus tool discovery: a connected server may still lack the tool you expect, so check status and tool inventory separately.
Cursor’s CLI can show server status, configuration source, transport, and available tools. Cursor also notes that a crashing or timed-out MCP server does not necessarily affect other servers; troubleshoot the failing integration before resetting others.
