He is expected to lead the finance function and join the executive board, succeeding Alan Rankine, who plans to leave for a role outside the organisation. The appointment comes as Scottish Friendly and OneFamily work toward a proposed merger expected to take effect in early 2027, also subject to approvals.
Who is Scott McNeill, Scottish Friendly’s incoming CFO?
McNeill is Scottish Friendly’s chief actuary. The appointment report says he is set to move from that role to CFO, with the change conditional on regulatory approval. He is expected to lead the society’s finance function and become an executive director; no precise start date was reported.
Scottish Friendly chief executive Stephen McGee described McNeill as bringing “deep knowledge of our business with extensive actuarial and financial expertise.” McNeill said he was delighted to have the opportunity to become CFO “at such an important period in Scottish Friendly’s history.”
Why is Alan Rankine stepping down?
Rankine intends to step down and take an opportunity outside Scottish Friendly. The appointment report does not give a more specific reason for his departure. He joined the society in 2018 as chief actuary and became CFO in 2022.

Rankine is expected to remain until early 2027 to support the proposed merger and an orderly handover. His planned departure timing does not establish a precise date for McNeill to take up the CFO role.
How does the appointment relate to the OneFamily merger?
OneFamily and Scottish Friendly announced a proposed merger on 4 February 2026. If completed, the combined mutual is projected to serve more than 2.3 million members and have almost £10 billion in assets under management; those figures describe the proposed group, not a post-merger result.

The announced plan is for the combined mutual to operate under the OneFamily group name, while the Scottish Friendly, OneFamily and Beagle Street brands would remain. The organisations also said they would maintain bases in Brighton and Glasgow. McNeill is expected, subject to approvals, to become CFO of the future merged organisation as well as taking on the Scottish Friendly finance leadership role.

At announcement, the organisations projected that the merger would take effect in early 2027, subject to necessary approvals. Scottish Friendly’s 2026 results release likewise described early 2027 as the expected timing and retained the regulatory condition. This is a forecast, not a confirmed completion date: the available announcements do not establish that the required approvals have been granted or that the merger has completed.
