Christa Pike survived Tennessee’s September 30, 2026, execution attempt and remained critically ill, according to an update from her attorneys on October 2.

What Pike’s attorneys said about her condition

In a court filing described by the Associated Press as the first detailed account of her condition, Pike’s attorneys said she was unconscious and on a ventilator in a hospital. They attributed serious effects, including injuries to both arms, to pentobarbital. Those medical details come from her attorneys; the reviewed reporting contains no independent medical statement or prognosis.

The Associated Press reported that Pike was still breathing after two doses of the execution drug. She was taken to a hospital after the attempt.

What Tennessee says about the attempt

In a September 30 media advisory, the Tennessee Department of Correction said: “The Tennessee Department of Correction followed every step of the State’s lawful, established execution protocol approved by the Attorney General’s Office.”
