You can fit brunch, one or two cultural stops, a laneway wander and evening drinks into a CBD-centered day in Melbourne. Treat a rave as a date-specific possibility, not a nightly fixture: check current event listings, entry details and your return trip before you go.
How to spend 24 hours in Melbourne
Keep the route compact rather than trying to see every major attraction. Start with coffee or brunch in the CBD, choose one main gallery or museum, add a short laneway walk, then decide between the market or gardens based on the day and your interests. Finish with dinner and a pub or rooftop drink; look for a specific dance event separately.
Morning: brunch and coffee
Begin in the CBD, where you can keep the rest of the day within reach. Higher Ground is one breakfast option named by Visit Victoria; its one-day guide also mentions coffee and pastry stops including Market Lane, Dukes, Lune and Agathé. These are examples, not confirmation that a venue is open on your travel date, so check current service and hours before setting out. Visit Victoria’s one-day Melbourne itinerary
Late morning: choose one cultural stop
For a central stop, consider NGV International, ACMI at Fed Square or State Library Victoria. The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia is another option in the broader city itinerary. Pick according to the collection or exhibition you most want to see and the time available; a single day is not enough for a thorough visit to every institution.

#1 Best Overall
Melbourne Museum is in Carlton Gardens, farther north of the central cluster. It can work well if its exhibitions are your priority, but account for the extra travel rather than treating it as an effortless add-on to Fed Square or the NGV. Visit Victoria’s one-day itinerary and 48-hour itinerary list these city sights and alternatives.
Lunch or early afternoon: market if the schedule fits
Queen Victoria Market is a useful food and browsing stop when it is open on your visit date. The City of Melbourne listing gives these regular hours:
Rank #2
| Day | Listed hours |
|---|---|
| Tuesday, Thursday and Friday | 6:00 am–3:00 pm |
| Saturday | 6:00 am–4:00 pm |
| Sunday | 9:00 am–4:00 pm |
| Monday and Wednesday | No hours listed |
The listing specifies free entry. Check the market’s own calendar for public holidays and special events, as regular hours may not describe a particular date. City of Melbourne: Queen Victoria Market
Alternative afternoon: Royal Botanic Gardens
If you would rather take a quieter outdoor break, Visit Victoria highlights Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Melbourne Gardens. The itinerary describes the collection as more than 8,500 plant species; the page does not state a year for that figure. The gardens and Queen Victoria Market are not adjacent, so choose between them or allow time for the journey instead of squeezing both into the day. Visit Victoria’s one-day Melbourne itinerary

Late afternoon: a laneway walk
Make Hosier Lane a short stop for street art as you move between central sights. It fits naturally around the Fed Square area, but keep the visit brief if you have a booked exhibition or need to travel to Carlton Gardens or the market.
Evening: dinner, then a pub or rooftop
Visit Victoria points visitors toward Chinatown for dumplings and names Siglo, HER Bar and Naked For Satan as rooftop-drink options. These are itinerary examples, not verified information about current opening hours, capacity or entry rules. Check directly with a venue before making it the anchor of your evening. The one-day guide gives the broad city-to-evening arc; its 48-hour guide also names Section 8 and Whitehart Bar as late-night laneway-bar examples.

How to find late-night dancing on your date
The official city itineraries support a late-night bar option, but they do not establish that a rave—or any particular dance event—runs every night. Event dates, start and finish times, tickets and door policies depend on the listing and organiser. Before choosing a venue, check:
- Whether an event is actually scheduled for your date, and its start and end times.
- Ticket availability, age or identification requirements, and door or re-entry conditions.
- The neighbourhood and travel time from dinner or your last stop.
- How you will get back, including the final suitable service for your route.
For a date-specific plan, consult current event listings and the organiser’s own ticket and entry information. Do not assume a bar is a rave venue just because it stays open late; the 48-hour itinerary names late-night bars but does not confirm a particular event.

Getting around the CBD and back late
The Free Tram Zone can help with travel among central stops. Visit Victoria describes the City Circle Tram as taking around an hour for a full loop and running approximately every 12 minutes from 9:30 am to 5 pm daily, except Christmas Day and Good Friday. Those are general visitor-guide timings, not a guarantee for a particular service or date; check current details before relying on them. Visit Victoria: Melbourne transport
Visit Victoria says the Night Network provides all-night metropolitan trains and trams on weekends, with late-night buses; standard myki fares apply. Services that suit your trip depend on the stop, route and night. Use the Transport Victoria journey planner and current service notices to check the actual return journey. The 2026 Official Visitor Map, produced by Visit Victoria with the City of Melbourne and Transport Victoria, includes transport maps and attraction information.
Quick Recap
What to prioritise if your time is tight
- For a compact culture-focused day: choose a Fed Square, NGV or State Library stop, then walk Hosier Lane before dinner.
- For food and browsing: fit Queen Victoria Market around its listed hours and check its calendar for your date.
- For gardens: prioritise Melbourne Gardens and plan separately for the trip there; do not assume it sits beside the market.
- For a night out: settle the event date and return transport before committing to a late finish.
