Nick Foligno scored Minnesota’s opening goal as the Wild beat the Nashville Predators 3-1 in the season opener for both teams on October 1, 2026. His first-period wrist shot put Minnesota ahead 1-0; Blake Coleman scored the game-winning goal later in the period in his Wild debut.
How Foligno put Minnesota ahead
At 9:35 of the first period, a rebound sequence sent the puck into the high slot. Michael McCarron’s shot created the rebound, and Nashville forward Matthew Wood slowed it while diving. Foligno collected the puck and fired a wrist shot glove-side to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead.
The goal was the first of the game, not the game winner. Coleman made it 2-0 on a power play at 13:48, scoring the deciding goal in his Wild debut. Kirill Kaprizov added Minnesota’s third goal in the third period, while Roman Josi scored Nashville’s only goal. Season-opener result and goaltending
The October 1 game at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville was the season opener for both clubs. Minnesota goaltender Jesper Wallstedt made 19 saves, and Nashville’s Juuse Saros made 27, according to the Wild recap.

Foligno’s return to Minnesota
Minnesota acquired Foligno from Chicago at the March 6, 2026 trade deadline. The team said he recorded four points—one goal and three assists—in 17 games with Minnesota after the trade during the previous season, and described him as a regular presence on the penalty kill.
In a September 30 season preview, the Wild described 2026-27 as a possible 20th and final season for Foligno, not a confirmed retirement. Explaining his decision to return, Foligno said: “I kept coming to the realization that I wanted to (return). I felt like there was unfinished business and I had such a great time playing here I wanted to experience it in full.” The comments and background appeared in the team’s “Unfinished Business” preview.
