Aaron Judge will not play for the Yankees in the American League Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays: New York submitted its ALDS roster on October 3, 2026, without him. His availability for a later postseason round has not been confirmed.
Why Aaron Judge is unavailable for the ALDS
Judge has been sidelined since September 16 with a right calf strain. Before the roster decision, he had resumed running and taken live batting practice, but those activities did not lead to a place on the Yankees’ submitted ALDS roster. The Associated Press reported on October 2 that manager Aaron Boone said trainers would play a major role in evaluating Judge as the day unfolded.
The roster announcement resolves the question for this series: Judge is not eligible to play for the Yankees in this ALDS on the roster they submitted. The available reporting does not establish whether he could return in a later round.
How the status changed from uncertain to ruled out
- September 16: Judge sustained the right calf strain and has not played since, according to the October 2 Associated Press report.
- October 1: The Yankees completed a two-game Wild Card Series sweep of Boston. Judge missed the series because of the calf injury. The Associated Press recapped the sweep.
- October 2: Boone said the Yankees were weighing whether Judge might be available at some point in the ALDS while assessing his live batting practice and workouts. That was before the roster deadline. Sportsnet’s AP report carried his comments.
- October 3: The Yankees submitted their ALDS roster without Judge, as CBS Sports reported.
Those reports describe different points in time, not a contradiction: Judge’s status was uncertain before the deadline and settled for this series once the roster was announced.

Judge’s season and injury context
The Associated Press reported that Judge finished the 2026 regular season with 66 games played, a .241 batting average, 18 home runs, 41 RBIs and an .871 OPS. The AP also reported that he had missed time with a fractured rib from May 31 to September 8, then played seven games before straining his calf. That history provides context but does not establish a recovery timetable. The AP’s Wild Card Series report includes those figures and details.
New York advanced by sweeping Boston and is facing Tampa Bay in the ALDS. The club’s roster decision, rather than Judge’s workouts alone, is what determines his availability for this series.
