Start with the official 511 traveler-information service for each state or region on your route. Check its coverage and report timestamps, then review closures, incidents, work zones, traffic, road-weather information and cameras where available. Save the route and turn on alerts if the service offers them. Recheck before leaving and, if conditions change, only when safely stopped.

How do I check road conditions?

  1. Find the right jurisdiction. Open the state or regional 511 website, app or phone service for each part of your trip. The National Weather Service’s United States Road Conditions directory links to state road-condition resources and phone numbers; its page says it was updated February 6, 2023, so verify current links and contact details with the state DOT.
  2. Search for your route. Enter a highway number, destination or map location. Turn on relevant layers, such as closures, crashes, construction, traffic speeds, road-weather conditions, alerts and cameras. Not every service offers every layer, and coverage may focus on major highways rather than local streets.
  3. Inspect each report. Check the timestamp, direction of travel, affected segment and report source. Conditions can change quickly, and providers do not share a universal update interval.
  4. Save the trip and enable alerts. If supported, create a route and opt into notifications before departure. Arizona’s AZ511 describes saved routes and route alerts; Louisiana’s 511 system lists text and email alerts.
  5. Check again safely. Review conditions before setting out. If weather or an incident is changing the picture, pull over somewhere safe before using a phone to check again.

Which road-condition sources should I trust?

Use the official state or regional service to confirm agency-posted restrictions and road status. Navigation-app reports can add useful context, but they are not a substitute for checking an official closure or other safety-critical information.

Source What it can tell you How to use it
Official state or regional 511 Agency-reported incidents, closures, work zones, road weather, cameras or other traveler information; exact layers vary by service. Check whether your road is covered and confirm posted restrictions with the relevant agency.
Crowdsourced navigation reports Reports submitted by app users. DriveNC, for example, displays Waze reports alongside official NCDOT information. Use them as additional context. Check the individual report time and corroborate consequential closures where possible; completeness and accuracy are not guaranteed.

Is the highway open?

Search the relevant 511 service for the highway and the specific segment and direction you plan to travel. Look for a closure or restriction entry, its timestamp and source, and check an available camera if it helps clarify current conditions. If a crowdsourced report conflicts with an agency listing, use the official agency source for confirmation and follow any posted restrictions.

What should I check on a 511 map?

  • Closures and restrictions: Look for full closures, lane closures and other limitations affecting your segment.
  • Incidents and construction: Review crashes, delays and work zones that may change travel time or access.
  • Weather and road conditions: Turn on available road-weather layers and consult current official weather alerts when conditions warrant.
  • Cameras and traffic: Use camera views and speed information where offered to add context; availability varies by provider.
  • Report details: Note when the item was posted, which direction and segment it covers, and whether it comes from an agency or a third party.

Can I check conditions while driving?

Do not handle a phone while driving. Configure saved routes and alerts before departure, and check updates only when safely parked. The AZ511 app listing also warns against phone use while driving.
