The San Diego Padres signed right-handed pitcher Roel Ramírez to a minor-league contract on October 1, 2026. El Paso’s transaction listing recorded his assignment to the Chihuahuas the next day. The move is an organizational signing, not a major-league call-up.
What happened?
The Padres’ official transaction page records the signing of free-agent RHP Roel Ramírez on October 1, 2026, on a minor-league contract (Padres transactions). The El Paso Chihuahuas’ listing shows that he was assigned to the Triple-A affiliate on October 2 (El Paso transactions).
Those entries establish a minor-league signing and an immediate affiliate assignment. They do not report a place on San Diego’s 40-man roster or a major-league promotion.
What does the El Paso assignment mean?
The assignment places Ramírez in the Padres’ affiliated system with El Paso as his listed destination. The transaction records do not explain the Padres’ longer-term plan or specify his role with the Chihuahuas, so it would be premature to characterize the move as a call-up or forecast when he might pitch for San Diego.

Who is Roel Ramírez?
Ramírez is a right-handed pitcher born May 26, 1995, in Laredo, Texas. The Tampa Bay Rays selected him in the eighth round, 248th overall, of the 2013 draft. He made his major-league debut on August 16, 2020, according to MLB’s biography (MLB biography).
MLB’s profile records two regular-season major-league appearances and one inning pitched (MLB statistics). That is a very small major-league sample and should not be confused with his broader minor-league or Mexican League record. His recent Tijuana season is part of the context for his return to an affiliated organization.
