Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor email, web apps, office software and video calls, a current mainstream laptop processor is usually enough. Consider a higher tier when employees regularly run demanding applications, large spreadsheets or databases, or local AI workloads—but compare complete laptop configurations, not processor badges alone. Memory, cooling, battery life, compatibility, security and support can matter as much as the CPU.
Choose a processor for the work, not the badge
A processor family name does not tell you exactly how fast a laptop will feel or how long it will last on battery. The exact CPU model matters, but so do the laptop’s power limits, cooling, chassis, memory, firmware, battery and manufacturer tuning. Two laptops with processors from a similar tier can perform differently.
Use processor-tier recommendations as starting points, then check reviews of the exact laptop model and configuration. A recent IT Pro review illustrates why: in its tests, the Lenovo ThinkPad L14 Gen 7 with a Core Ultra 5 325 scored 469 in Cinebench 2024 multi-core, compared with 649 for the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5x and 646 for the Acer Swift Go 16 AI. In Geekbench 6 graphics, those systems scored 23,021, 13,300 and 13,669, respectively. These are results for three complete systems in those specific tests, not a general ranking of their processors. The ThinkPad ran for 20 hours and 13 minutes in IT Pro’s battery rundown test; that result applies to its reviewed configuration and test method, not to every laptop with the same CPU. How much processing power does a business laptop need?
Match the processor to the employee’s usual work and busiest realistic multitasking pattern. Dell’s September 2026 small-business guide recommends Core 5 or Core Ultra 5 for everyday work and Core Ultra 5 or 7 for heavier multitasking, financial modeling, CRM databases or AI-enabled applications. This is vendor guidance, not a universal performance rule; compare equivalent Ryzen options and specific laptop models too. Dell’s Small Business Tech Guide 2026

| Work pattern | Processor approach | Other priorities |
|---|---|---|
| Email, web apps, office suite and video calls | A current mainstream tier, such as Core 5/Core Ultra 5 or a comparable Ryzen option | Memory, SSD, keyboard and display, webcam, support and security |
| Many demanding apps, large spreadsheets, CRM or financial models | Compare stronger Core Ultra 5/7 and comparable Ryzen models in the actual laptop candidates | Consider 32 GB memory when the workload warrants it; check sustained performance and serviceability |
| Photo or video editing, graphics, development or analytics | Choose a higher-performance processor only after checking the application’s CPU and GPU needs | Memory, integrated or discrete graphics, cooling, display, storage, power adapter and workload-specific benchmarks |
| Local AI or newer on-device Windows features | Check the exact NPU and operating-system feature requirements if the intended workflow needs them | Application availability, privacy and security requirements, memory, and whether processing is local or cloud-based |
Do not neglect memory
Dell recommends 16 GB of RAM as a minimum for everyday work and 32 GB for users who frequently handle large spreadsheets, databases, CRM platforms or multiple demanding apps. These are Dell’s 2026 recommendations, not universal technical minimums. Check whether the memory is upgradeable before buying; a faster processor cannot make up for insufficient memory. Compare battery tests like for like
Battery results depend on screen brightness, display type and resolution, networking, workload, battery capacity and power mode. Compare tests using similar methods and pay attention to the exact laptop configuration. A manufacturer’s runtime figure is conditions-dependent, not a guarantee of what an employee will get.
How to compare Intel, AMD and Windows on Arm
Intel Core and Core Ultra
Intel’s current business materials cover mobile Core Ultra 5, 7 and 9 processors, including systems eligible for vPro. Its laptop processor comparison reference includes HX, H, U and V suffixes. Use the exact model number and laptop configuration when comparing; a family name or suffix alone does not establish performance, battery life or suitability. AMD Ryzen and Ryzen PRO
AMD offers Ryzen processors for business laptops, including business-oriented Ryzen PRO models. When comparing vendor performance claims, check the disclosed test date, laptop configurations, power levels and benchmark applications. Results from different systems or tests are not a clean measure of processor performance in your own workload. AMD’s Ryzen processors for business laptops

Windows on Arm and Snapdragon X
Snapdragon X laptops add Windows on Arm as an option. Common applications may run natively or through Windows translation, but confirm that every business-critical application, peripheral, VPN or security tool, and device-management product works on the specific laptop before deployment. This is especially important for older or specialist software.
Do you need an AI PC or Copilot+ PC?
An NPU is a dedicated processor block for certain AI workloads. “AI PC” is used broadly; “Copilot+ PC” is Microsoft’s defined hardware category. TechRadar’s 2026 guide describes Copilot+ PC criteria as an NPU capable of at least 40 TOPS, 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory, and at least 256 GB of SSD storage. Those criteria indicate eligibility for specified on-device features; they do not establish that a laptop is faster at ordinary office work, has enough storage for your business, or supports a particular application. Check current Microsoft requirements and the target application’s requirements before purchasing because feature requirements can change. TechRadar’s 2026 guide to laptop specifications

Treat NPU capability as a secondary buying filter unless staff have a specific local AI workflow or need a particular operating-system feature. A higher TOPS figure alone does not mean a laptop will be faster in spreadsheets, web apps or video calls.

- List the actual work. Record the applications employees use and how many demanding apps they typically run at once. Include specialist programs and peak workloads, not just the most common task.
- Shortlist exact configurations. Compare the CPU model, memory amount and upgradeability, SSD capacity, graphics, cooling and power configuration for each laptop. Do not compare only processor families.
- Verify compatibility. For Windows on Arm, confirm each critical application, peripheral, VPN or security tool, and management tool with its publisher or IT provider.
- Check fleet management and support. Compare Windows edition, firmware and security features, warranty, remote-management capabilities, deployment options and vendor support. Intel describes vPro capabilities that include remote diagnostics and management for eligible systems, but verify that the exact laptop SKU includes the features your business needs. Intel’s business laptop page
- Compare relevant battery results. Look for tests of the exact model using methods comparable to the other candidates, and account for differences in display, battery and workload.
- Calculate total cost. Include memory and storage upgrades, docks, monitors, warranty and deployment overhead, not only the laptop’s purchase price.
- Pay for performance only when the workload benefits. A balanced configuration with sufficient memory and good support can be a better business purchase than a premium CPU tier. Dell also identifies processor performance, memory and storage, display, security and manageability, and ecosystem compatibility as important small-business laptop considerations. That framework is useful, though it comes from a laptop vendor. Dell’s Small Business Tech Guide 2026
A practical buying decision
For typical office users, start with a current mainstream processor and a well-configured laptop. Move up when employees’ real workloads—such as frequent heavy multitasking, large datasets or creative applications—justify it, and evaluate graphics, memory and cooling alongside CPU capability. For local AI features, check the precise software and hardware requirements rather than buying on the strength of an AI label. In every case, make the final choice among complete laptop models based on the work they must do, their compatibility and support, and comparable performance and battery evidence.
