Coffee @ UMD is a student club where brewing coffee is a way to bring Terps together—not a campus café or a university coffee-hour program. A November 19, 2025, Maryland Today profile reports that more than 200 students attend its Friday gathering to socialize, study, play games and talk with baristas.
How Coffee @ UMD got started
Reid Xu ’24 founded Coffee @ UMD in 2022. The club began with an interest in specialty coffee and brewing technique; it has since become a recurring place for students to gather around coffee. In the November 2025 profile, Navya Bansal ’27 is identified as the club’s president.
Bansal connected that social role to students’ experiences after the pandemic: “A lot of Gen Z students feel alone, especially post-COVID,” she said. She also described what members have told her: “I’ve had a lot of people come up to me and tell me how connected they feel by coming to the club.” These are her observations, not a measured claim about the club’s effects or student loneliness.
When does Coffee @ UMD meet?
The Maryland Today feature lists the gathering as Fridays from 2–5 p.m. at the Adele H. Stamp Student Union. The specific room is shared through the club’s social account or GroupMe. These details reflect the schedule reported on November 19, 2025, and may change by term; check the club’s current official channels for the time, room and any attendance or membership information before going.

What does the club serve?
The feature describes pour-over coffee and oat-milk lattes as typical offerings. The club uses oat milk because it does not have refrigeration for cow’s milk and wants to include people who are dairy-intolerant. Seasonal drinks, including mocha and pumpkin spice lattes, have appeared occasionally rather than as a guaranteed menu.
Pour-over and specialty beans
Club members hand-grind beans at gatherings, using one rotating five-pound bag of Hyattsville-based Vigilante Coffee each week, according to the 2025 profile. Bansal describes pour-over as “almost like brewing tea,” adding that it can bring out distinctive flavors: “Some taste floral, like cherry blossoms.” Her point is that coffee need not taste only bitter: “People think coffee is just bitter, but there are so many wild, wonderful flavors out there. You just have to find them.”

The feature also mentions a recent matcha offering and a coffee-like mix made by Atomo with the university’s xFoundry. Those are examples of occasional offerings, not a standing menu promise.

How the club trains its baristas
Coffee @ UMD holds separate barista workshops every other week, according to the feature. Bansal said, “Almost all of our baristas had no prior experience at a café,” making the workshops a way for students to learn practical skills as they help serve drinks. Student government funding helps cover equipment, including an espresso machine.

Coffee @ UMD is a student organization built around gathering, learning and brewing together. A campus café is a place to purchase a drink; a scheduled university coffee-hour event may focus on meeting a particular community. They serve different purposes, and neither should be confused with the club’s Friday gathering.
