Transporter-18 successfully delivered 130 payloads to low Earth orbit, including Google’s Project Suncatcher pathfinder: a Planet-built spacecraft reported to carry four Google tensor processing units (TPUs). The mission began testing selected hardware relevant to orbital computing; it did not demonstrate a complete, useful, or economical orbital data center. Post-launch Suncatcher test results are not established in the available reporting.

What happened on Transporter-18?

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 launched the commercial rideshare mission from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, on October 1, 2026. NASA reported liftoff at 11:32 a.m. PDT and said three NASA-supported spacecraft were among the payloads. SpaceX’s mission listing identifies the vehicle, site, and date; NASA’s launch account describes its supported missions.

Space.com reported that all 130 payloads were deployed into low Earth orbit. Deployment began roughly 54.5 minutes after launch and spanned about 11 minutes, according to that report. The rideshare included CubeSats, microsatellites, hosted payloads, spacecraft carrying reentry vehicles, and payloads first carried on orbital transfer vehicles for later deployment. Transporter-18 was a broad commercial rideshare—not a dedicated data-center launch. Space.com’s post-launch report gives the count and deployment details.

What did Google’s Suncatcher satellite test?

Before launch, Space.com reported that Google’s Project Suncatcher pathfinder was built by Planet and carried four TPUs. Google’s stated aim was to examine how compute chips respond to radiation in orbit and how to dissipate the heat they generate. Those were planned tests described before launch; the cited reporting does not provide their post-flight results. Space.com’s September 25 prelaunch report describes the spacecraft and test goals.

Why cooling matters in orbit

Heat does not leave a spacecraft through surrounding air as it does in a conventional data center. A system has to move heat away from chips and reject it through radiators. Space.com relayed Google’s prelaunch description of heat pipes and radiators as approaches under development; the company also said it had tested cooling technology in a thermal-vacuum chamber. A ground test in that chamber is not evidence that the system has demonstrated effective heat removal in orbit.

Radiation and optical links

Chip behavior under radiation is another question for the pathfinder: a useful computing system must operate reliably despite the space environment, not merely power on. Communications are also part of the challenge. Space.com reported that Google described the precision required for satellite-to-satellite laser links and planned to test two spacecraft in 2027. That was a future plan reported before Transporter-18, not a completed Suncatcher result.

Does the launch prove AI can run in space?

No. Getting relevant hardware into orbit is an early component demonstration, not proof of sustained AI computing or an integrated orbital data-center service. The available reports do not establish useful workload performance over time, dependable high-rate communications, commercial availability, or competitive economics for Suncatcher.

SpaceX has separately described orbital data centers as a potential use for Starship and argued that launch capacity would matter to scaling such infrastructure. That is SpaceX’s strategic position, not an independent finding that orbital data centers are technically or economically feasible. SpaceX’s September 2026 update sets out that ambition.

What else flew on the rideshare?

Transporter-18 carried experiments and spacecraft with objectives distinct from Suncatcher. NASA described three of its supported missions:

  • ASCENT Propulsion Dual Mode CubeSat: Designed to demonstrate chemical and electrospray propulsion using a shared propellant supply and feed system. NASA says its propellant has 50 percent higher specific impulse density than conventional propellants such as hydrazine; that is NASA’s comparison for the propellant, not a general claim about overall spacecraft performance.
  • SPRITE: An astrophysics CubeSat designed to detect ultraviolet light unavailable to ground-based observation and study gas, dust, and high-energy radiation in galaxies.
  • SSPICY: Uses Starfish Space’s Otter 24C to inspect up to four inactive U.S.-origin satellites in low Earth orbit. NASA said inspections were expected to begin in 2027 and the mission was expected to operate for about two years; these are mission expectations, not completed inspections or operating results.

Space.com also reported that Cowboy Space’s Reason-1 was intended to demonstrate laser power beaming from low Earth orbit to a ground receiver, and that Starfish Space’s Otter spacecraft is a satellite-servicing vehicle. These are separate payloads, not parts of Suncatcher.

Meridian Space announced initial activation of its First Customer Link communications payload after the launch. The company says the reconfigurable reflectarray antenna is designed to support downlink speeds of up to 1.1 Gbps. That is a stated design capability, not independently measured throughput. Meridian Space’s October 2 announcement describes the payload and its claimed capability.

How to judge future orbital data-center demonstrations

A label such as “AI satellite” does not show whether a system works as a data center. Useful comparisons need evidence about the engineering and service as a whole:

  • Power: How much power reaches the compute hardware, and how does the system handle periods without sunlight? The cited Suncatcher mission reporting gives no power-system measurements.
  • Heat rejection: Has cooling only been tested on the ground, or has heat removal been validated in orbit during sustained computing?
  • Compute resilience: What workloads ran, how did chips behave under radiation, and for how long?
  • Communications: What link capacity and availability were demonstrated between spacecraft and to ground stations? Suncatcher laser-link testing was described as planned, not completed.
  • Integrated utility and economics: Did the system deliver sustained useful work, and what are the costs and operational needs, including maintenance or replacement? The cited reports do not establish these figures.

Until those pieces are demonstrated together, a flight of compute hardware is evidence of an experiment in orbit—not evidence of a commercially useful orbital data center.
