A YouTuber’s mercury-filled speaker cable reportedly sounded almost the same as copper to its builder—but the comparison was sighted and not shown to be level-matched. It makes a large audible payoff from conductor metal alone harder to defend; it does not prove that every speaker cable sounds alike, or answer whether silver wire sounds different.

What the mercury speaker-cable video showed

According to Headphonesty’s 2026 account, the pierogi engineering YouTube builder filled four clear tubes with mercury, capped them, and used them as speaker conductors alongside an ordinary copper cable. The bottles were reportedly dated August 30, 1983. Before listening, the builder predicted mercury might sound duller or warmer. He later described only very small possible differences and wondered whether bias was affecting his impression.

That is an account of one builder’s listening impression, not a controlled demonstration. The comparison was sighted: the cables and their labels made it possible to know which one was connected. The video did not show level matching. Those conditions cannot separate a real audible difference from expectation or a small level change, and they do not establish what other listeners would hear with different speakers, amplifiers, cable runs, or signal levels.

What the resistance readings mean—and don’t mean

Headphonesty reports that a meter displayed about 0.07–0.08 ohms for the copper cable and 0.22–0.23 ohms for one mercury tube. The displayed difference was roughly 0.15 ohms. These were low-range, two-wire multimeter readings, where the test leads and contact points contribute to the result; they do not independently establish the precise resistance of a complete speaker circuit.

Amazon Basics 16-Gauge Speaker Wire Cable, Polarity Marked, 100 ft, Bronze
  • IN THE BOX: 16 gauge speaker wire cable (100 feet)
  • CLEAR AUDIO: Plastic jacket helps ensure high-quality undistorted signals to and from audio equipment
  • CONVENIENT: Connects audio speakers to an A/V receiver or amplifier
  • SIMPLE INSTALL: Black line on one side of wire indicates the polarity for a proper audio system set up
  • EASY DISPENSING: Comes wrapped around a hard plastic spool for simple dispensing

The account infers that two tubes would likely be used in a speaker circuit, which could put the added resistance around 0.30 ohms. That is an inference from the build, not a separately reported measurement of the complete circuit. It should not be mistaken for a directly measured system result.

The “57× worse” comparison refers to mercury’s conductivity relative to copper, as reported by Headphonesty—not to a universal multiplier for the resistance or sound of a finished cable. Resistance depends on the conductor’s length and cross-sectional area as well as its material. Headphonesty also puts silver’s room-temperature conductivity advantage over copper at about 6 percent, and says a 3 percent increase in copper diameter closes that material-property gap. None of those figures is a listening test of silver wire.

Do expensive speaker cables make a difference?

This video cannot answer that question for every product and installation. It suggests that a striking difference should not be assumed simply because a conductor uses a different metal. Whether a cable has meaningful electrical effects depends on the finished cable and how it is used—not just its marketing description or conductor material.

For a real installation, compare the practical electrical and fit requirements rather than relying on claims such as “warmer” or “more detailed.” QED, a cable manufacturer, says its tested group showed geometry and dielectric materials were generally more significant than conductor metallurgy; its report discusses resistance, inductance, capacitance, and geometry as relevant properties (QED’s report). This is the manufacturer’s finding for its tested cables, not a universal verdict on every design.

  • Run length: longer conductors have more resistance, all else equal.
  • Conductor cross-section or gauge: thicker conductors reduce resistance for a given length.
  • Total loop resistance: account for the outgoing and return conductors in the speaker circuit.
  • Geometry and electrical properties: cable layout can affect resistance, inductance, and capacitance.
  • Terminations and fit: choose connectors and cable that work securely with the amplifier and speakers.

Benchmark Media Systems lead engineer John Siau argues that cable errors are normally well below audibility and recommends prioritizing other audio-system components (Benchmark’s position). That is a named vendor’s view, not a neutral consensus statement. The useful practical point is to match the cable to the run and equipment instead of assuming that premium metallurgy guarantees better sound.

Can you hear a difference between copper and silver speaker wire?

The mercury comparison did not test silver, so it cannot settle copper-versus-silver listening claims. The conductivity figures are material comparisons, not proof that listeners can or cannot hear a difference between particular finished cables. Cable length, cross-section, geometry, and the rest of the system still matter.

Another frequently cited comparison, SoundGuys’ coathanger test, has a narrower takeaway: its findings apply to the cables of appropriate specifications tested there. The authors explicitly caution that it does not show that any arbitrary metal object is suitable for audio equipment (SoundGuys’ test and caveat).

When cable resistance can become audible

The possibility of small differences does not mean every cable is interchangeable under every condition. Headphonesty recounts a historical test by research psychiatrist Laurence Greenhill involving 11 listeners and a double-blind ABX comparator. As reported by Headphonesty, every panelist identified a 30-foot, 24-gauge cable with 1.8-ohm resistance when pink noise was used; a measured 1.25 dB response dip may explain why listeners described it as duller.

The same account says 16-gauge lamp cord measured 0.24 ohms, compared with 0.09 ohms for Monster Cable, a reported insertion-loss difference of 0.16 dB. Listeners reportedly detected the difference with pink noise but not with choral music. These are figures as Headphonesty reports them about a historical test, not a universal threshold or a result independently established here.

The contrast matters: very high resistance or unusually thin wire can produce measurable effects and, under particular test conditions, audible ones. That does not show that normal, appropriately specified cables cause large differences—or that every material change is audible.

Why the mercury build is not a DIY project

Do not recreate this cable. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says metallic mercury mainly causes health effects when inhaled as vapor. It also warns against vacuuming a mercury spill, which can put mercury into the air and increase exposure, and against using a broom, which can break mercury into smaller droplets and spread it. If a spill occurs, follow current EPA guidance and contact local health or fire authorities; do not improvise cleanup methods.
