For U.S. Thanksgiving and Christmas travel in 2026, start tracking fares now and treat mid-October as a sensible point to decide—especially if your dates are fixed. Historical averages and a late-September fare snapshot support acting deliberately, but they do not prove that every route will get more expensive after October 15. Compare the fare for your exact itinerary with the value of waiting for a possible sale.
What the evidence says about booking holiday flights
There are two useful but different signals: historical booking patterns and this year’s reported fare levels. Neither predicts the price of a particular flight with certainty.
Historical averages point to different windows for Thanksgiving and Christmas
Google’s September 9, 2025 analysis found that Thanksgiving fares had historically been lowest an average of 35 days before departure, with a low-price range of 24 to 59 days. For Christmas, the average low came 51 days before departure, within a 32-to-73-day range. Google said Christmas bargains could generally be found from mid-October to mid-November. These are historical U.S. averages, not booking guarantees for 2026 or any specific airline or route. Google’s analysis and methodology covered average round-trip fares observed from January 1, 2021, through August 1, 2025, for trips of four to 16 days departing from the top 4,000 U.S. markets. For Thanksgiving and Christmas, the trips departed before the holiday and returned after it.
Hopper’s 2026 snapshot showed high fares by late September
In its September 25, 2026 Holiday Travel Index, Hopper reported that holiday airfares had reached 10-year highs. Its reported domestic round-trip averages were $402 for Thanksgiving, up 31% ($95) year over year, and $452 for Christmas, up 23% ($85). Hopper calculated these as demand-weighted averages of the 10th percentile of prices available during the preceding week of searches. They are dated national indicators, not live quotes for your route. Hopper advised travelers to monitor fares and book before Halloween. Read Hopper’s 2026 Holiday Travel Index.

No verified statistic establishes that fares on every route are guaranteed to rise after mid-October.
Thanksgiving and Christmas do not have the same historical timing
| Holiday | Google’s historical average low | Historical low-price range | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving | 35 days before departure | 24–59 days before departure | Use the range as context while monitoring your dates; it does not promise a low fare in that window. |
| Christmas | 51 days before departure | 32–73 days before departure | Google said bargains could generally be found from mid-October to mid-November, but this is a historical pattern rather than a 2026 forecast. |

How to decide whether to book or keep watching
- Search your exact itinerary now. Compare the actual dates, airports, number of travelers, and acceptable flight times. A national average cannot tell you whether the price you see is good for your route.
- Check the dates around your preferred departure and return. Google’s 2025 analysis found Monday-to-Wednesday flights were about 13% cheaper than weekend flights on average. That is a historical average; it may not hold for your route. If you can shift travel days, compare the total itinerary cost and whether the alternatives still work for you.
- Use an itinerary-specific insight or alert if you continue monitoring. Google says its flight search results can show a “cheapest time to book” insight for selected dates and destinations, and it offers price tracking alerts. These tools can help you observe a particular itinerary; an alert does not guarantee a future price drop. See Google’s holiday travel guidance.
- Choose a decision date instead of waiting indefinitely. For 2026 holiday trips, mid-October is a practical checkpoint in light of the historical timing and Hopper’s late-September snapshot. Set the date around your own flexibility and fare, then reassess the specific itinerary rather than assuming a sale will arrive.
Flexibility can matter more than the day you buy
Google’s analysis found only a small average difference based on the weekday of purchase: Tuesday was 1.3% cheaper than Sunday. By contrast, the average difference it reported for flying Monday through Wednesday rather than on a weekend was about 13%. These figures are historical averages, not savings estimates for an individual booking. If you have room to adjust, compare travel dates and departure or return days before relying on a particular purchase weekday.
Also compare the full itineraries you would genuinely take. A lower fare with a stop may be a poor trade if the added travel time or schedule makes the trip unsuitable; a nonstop may be worth choosing at a higher price. The relevant comparison is the current price and available schedule for your own acceptable options, not a broad prediction that one type of route will rise first.

Why a “wait for a sale” strategy can backfire
Airfares vary with route, dates, demand, and available seats. A sale is possible, but neither Google’s historical averages nor Hopper’s dated national snapshot establishes that your preferred flight will become cheaper. Waiting can leave you with fewer acceptable schedules or a higher fare; booking early can mean missing a later drop. The decision is therefore a trade-off between a fare you are willing to pay now and the uncertain benefit of continuing to monitor.
Google’s James Byers, Group Product Manager, Search, put the general advice this way: “Usually it’s best to book flights on the early side, especially if your plans aren’t very flexible.” If your plans are rigid, a suitable available fare may be more valuable than the possibility of a later discount. If your dates are flexible, compare nearby travel days and keep tracking the exact itinerary before deciding.
