A shallow quake felt across Melbourne and regional Victoria can produce a sudden jolt, but no single factor explains what every person felt: distance, local geology and topography, and individual circumstances all matter.
Which earthquake are reports describing?
Same-day coverage identifies the event as an earthquake near Leongatha in Victoria, shortly after 2 a.m. local time on Saturday, October 3, 2026. The Guardian, citing Geoscience Australia, reported a preliminary magnitude of 4.8 and an approximate depth of 10 km; SBS also reported that shaking was felt across Melbourne and regional areas. Those figures are reported preliminary parameters, not a final catalogue confirmation. The Guardian’s report and SBS’s report describe the event and its reported reach.
Why can an earthquake feel like a sharp, sudden jolt?
The reports establish that residents were woken and that some homes shook, but they do not identify one cause for any individual’s perception. Geoscience Australia explains that felt shaking depends on the earthquake’s magnitude, distance from it, and the geology and topography where a person is; intensity can vary greatly over short distances. A relatively shallow event reported near populated communities is relevant context, but depth alone cannot show why the shaking felt sharp at a particular address. Geoscience Australia’s earthquake information explains these factors.
Why might people in different places describe it differently?
- Distance: The distance from the source affects felt intensity. People in different locations may experience different shaking.
- Local ground and terrain: Geology and topography can affect shaking, even between nearby places. The available reporting does not compare soil or ground conditions at individual homes.
- Situation at the time: A jolt that wakes someone may be described differently from shaking noticed while already awake. News accounts include residents saying they were woken or that their house shook; those are individual accounts, not representative measurements.
The reports do not provide instrument readings for individual homes or identify a particular seismic wave as the explanation for a person’s sensation. A broad-scale modeled shaking map should not be treated as a measurement of shaking or damage at a specific property. Geoscience Australia’s earthquake hazard and risk information discusses the limits of broad-scale shaking information.

What should you do if shaking starts?
