Go into a jewelry store with a spending limit and a short list of priorities, then compare rings under ordinary lighting before deciding. For a diamond engagement ring, weigh cut, color, clarity, carat and shape against your budget; for other rings, focus on the design, fit, materials and the services you need. Ask about return terms, documentation and ongoing care before paying.
Prepare before your jewelry-store visit
Set a budget and rank what matters
Choose a realistic maximum before you start trying rings on. Kristi Kroll, HauteCarat’s director of client relations, told The Knot: “My best suggestion for a budget is to be realistic—set a budget that aligns with your current financial situation.” Decide which features matter most so a salesperson can show you options that fit both your finances and your taste. For diamond engagement rings, that may mean prioritizing a particular shape or cut over carat weight, or making a different tradeoff; there is no single best balance for every shopper.
The Knot’s 2024 Jewelry and Engagement Study, as reported in its January 2025 article, found that 71% of proposers set a budget. That is a study finding, not a rule that every shopper follows.
Research retailers and plan comparisons
Look into a store’s reputation, customer service and policies before visiting. BriteCo recommends researching stores and reading customer reviews; The Knot also advises checking seller credentials and service. The Knot’s report of its 2024 study says couples visited an average of five retailers before purchasing, which can be a useful reminder to compare rather than feel pressed to buy at the first stop.

If you are considering an online seller, Kroll advises: “If you go with an online company, vet them, give them a call, request FaceTimes and do your research.” The same principle applies in person: ask questions and make sure you understand the seller’s services and terms.
How to compare rings in person
For a diamond engagement ring, compare the details that affect appearance
Use the four Cs—cut, color, clarity and carat—as a framework for discussing diamond quality and price, not as a universal ranking of what you should buy. Consider the stone’s shape and the overall ring design as well. Which combination looks right is personal, and the best fit depends on your priorities and budget.

Check the ring outside showroom lighting
Jewelry-store lighting is designed to make gemstones look appealing. Ask whether you can view a candidate in natural light or another ordinary lighting setting, then notice how the stone and setting look away from the display. The Knot recommends this step so a shopper can assess the item in a less theatrical environment.
Record favorites and compare them fairly
Take photos or video of rings you are considering at different stores. Keep your hand position similar in each image so the comparisons are more useful. If you may wear an engagement ring with a wedding band, try the two together and check how they sit against one another before choosing.

Questions to ask before you buy
Policies and services vary by retailer and purchase, so get answers for the specific ring in writing when possible. Ask:
- What are the return and exchange terms, including any deadlines or conditions?
- What does the warranty cover, and what is excluded?
- What stone documentation is included, and can you see it before purchase?
- Is an appraisal available, and is it included or separately priced?
- What would resizing cost, and are there limits on resizing this design?
- What maintenance might the ring need, and what are the costs?
If you are considering a custom ring
Ask whether the jeweler can provide digital renderings and explain the choices behind the proposed design. A rendering can help you review details before work proceeds. The Knot’s quoted expert says custom work may give a shopper more room to adjust a design to a budget, but that does not mean custom is always less expensive; ask for a clear quote and confirm what changes would affect the cost.

Make the decision on your terms
Compare your notes, images, fit and after-sale terms alongside the ring’s appearance. Give yourself time to consider the options; The Knot’s report of its 2024 study found that 31% of proposees researched ring preferences for more than a year. That figure describes the study respondents, not a recommended timeline. Buy when the ring suits your priorities and you understand the retailer’s obligations and your own costs.
