It added map-specific win-probability data for Cache, refreshed rating baselines, and adjusted several Round Swing rules. In HLTV’s reported sample, the average single-map rating movement was 0.021, although a small share of player-map values moved considerably more.
Why HLTV updated Rating 3.0
HLTV says the update incorporates more CS2 match data and recalibrates parts of its existing system. One reason for revisiting the baselines was the economy changes Valve made in July 2025: HLTV describes the resulting game as more CT-sided, while its prior averages included only a few months of play under the new economy.
The update is intended to improve the calculation’s accuracy ahead of the 2026 HLTV Awards and Top 20 Players of the Year. That is HLTV’s stated rationale, not an independent finding that Rating 3.0 has been proven more accurate.
What changed in the calculation
More match data and updated baselines
HLTV updated the win-probability data used for Round Swing and eco-adjustment using CS2 games through September 29, 2026, including map-specific figures for Cache. It also refreshed the averages and standard deviations for all sub-ratings using LAN CS2 games through the same date.

Map-specific win probabilities
A 5v5 situation does not necessarily have the same win probability on every map. HLTV added map-specific data for Cache to account for that context. When a map is new, or an exact situation has too few observations, the calculation falls back to global averages for that round. HLTV says the choice is made per round; a round does not switch from map-specific to global probabilities partway through.
HLTV identifies Cache as the map most affected by adding map-specific data. This does not mean every Cache round uses a unique probability: sparse situations can still use the global fallback.

Round Swing rules
Round Swing estimates how a player’s actions affect a team’s chance of winning a round. HLTV changed several details of that calculation:
- Kills no longer contribute to Round Swing when fewer than 10 seconds remain on the bomb timer, or fewer than 5 seconds remain when CTs have a defuse kit, unless a CT is defusing.
- In rounds with a bomb plant, only kills made after the plant count when excess swing is distributed at round end.
- A player cannot receive negative Round Swing after a kill. If an unusual situation would make the kill lower the team’s win probability, HLTV assigns zero swing instead.
- Stand-ins no longer receive Round Swing for rounds they did not play.
HLTV says Inferno was most affected by the bomb-timer change, which it links to the map’s post-plant-heavy nature.

How much did historical ratings move?
HLTV reported the following results for its sample. These figures describe HLTV’s recalculated values; they have not been independently reproduced here.
| Measure | HLTV-reported figure |
|---|---|
| Maps in the sample | 29,030 maps, including 9,029 LAN maps |
| CS2 maps played from July through September 2026 | 6,687 maps |
| Average movement in single-map Rating 3.0 | 0.021 |
| Player-maps that moved by at least 0.05 | 9.4% |
| Player-maps that moved by at least 0.10 | 1% |
| Largest reported movement | 0.31 |
The average movement was small, but it does not describe every player-map. The threshold figures show that some values shifted more substantially, with 1% of player-maps moving by at least 0.10. The largest reported movement was 0.31.

How to interpret a before-and-after rating
When comparing an old and updated Rating 3.0 value, separate the size of the change from the reason for it. A useful comparison identifies the same player, event or map sample, then notes which calculation inputs and rules apply and whether the affected context involves Cache, bomb timing, a planted-bomb round or a round played by a stand-in.
An isolated player-map example should not be treated as representative of the whole distribution. HLTV’s reported average and threshold shares provide broader context, but they remain figures from HLTV’s own calculations rather than external validation of the rating’s accuracy.
