Honda and Redwire are exploring a robotic system for future commercial space stations that could help retrieve experiments, move samples and materials, and operate laboratory equipment. The concept would combine Honda’s dexterous robotic hand with Redwire’s STAARK arm and experiment-locker technology; it is under development, not an operating station system.

What would the robot do in space?

The partners’ stated aim is to automate some research and routine laboratory work. In a possible workflow, the arm could reach and position equipment or materials, while the hand could make the more delicate contact needed to handle samples or operate lab equipment. Experiment-locker technology is also part of the proposed solution.

Honda presents this as a way to reduce the time crews spend on repetitive tasks. It also identifies possible station-support uses such as inventory management, cargo movement and inspection. These are potential applications, not a finalized feature list or demonstrated capabilities of an integrated system. Honda’s October 1, 2026 announcement does not report measured crew-time savings, research throughput gains or cost reductions.

What each partner contributes

Technology Proposed role What has been reported
Honda multi-fingered robotic hand Dexterous contact and manipulation, such as handling samples, small objects and laboratory equipment. Honda says it has actively controlled joints and force and tactile sensing across the fingertips and palm. Honda also reports durability testing under varied fingertip loads, without publishing quantitative results. Source
Redwire STAARK robotic arm Reach and positioning to move equipment and access work around a station. Honda describes STAARK as an affordable, modular and customizable robotic system for on-orbit applications. It reports that recent testing demonstrated autonomous tracking and grasping of dynamic objects; no numerical results are given in the announcement. Source
Experiment-locker technology Part of the proposed research-workflow solution. The announcement names it as a system component but does not specify its design or performance. Source

The reported STAARK test concerns the arm, not the combined Honda-Redwire concept. The announcement provides no comparative specifications, payload ratings, integrated test results or basis for ranking the components against one another.

Why consider station automation?

Honda frames the project around the transition from the International Space Station to commercially operated low Earth orbit stations. The company says developers are evaluating research and routine laboratory operations for a future environment designed around smaller crews and shorter astronaut stays. Its rationale is that automation could ease demands on crew time and help stations make greater use of research facilities. That is Honda’s outlook, not a measured result or independent forecast.

What is confirmed—and what remains unknown?

The partners say they are exploring the combined solution. They planned to discuss potential applications with commercial station developers and prospective industry partners at the International Astronautical Congress in Antalya, Türkiye, October 5–9, 2026. The announcement does not name a station customer, report a contract or deployment, or provide a development schedule or price.

It also gives no quantitative performance figures for the integrated system. Honda reports hand durability testing and STAARK tracking-and-grasping tests, but publishes no numerical test results in the release. The proposed tasks and efficiency benefits should therefore be read as intended or potential uses, not proven operational outcomes.
