’50s wiring changes where the tone capacitor connects on a Les Paul-style passive circuit. When you turn down the guitar’s volume, it tends to retain more treble than modern wiring, but the tone and volume controls interact more. It changes the controls’ response—not the guitar’s appearance—and it is not automatically better for every player.

What ’50s wiring changes

In the Les Paul-style circuits described by Seymour Duncan and Premier Guitar, the distinction is the tone capacitor’s connection on the volume pot. Modern wiring connects it to the input (outer) lug; ’50s wiring connects it to the output (middle) lug.

As Premier Guitar author Dirk Wacker puts it, “With the volume fully opened, the ’50s wiring is identical to the modern wiring.” The difference is most relevant as you adjust the controls, especially when rolling back volume.

How the two arrangements behave

Wiring Tone-capacitor connection Behavior described by the sources
Modern Volume-pot input (outer) lug More treble loss as volume is lowered; overall volume may be maintained better in the cited comparison.
’50s Volume-pot output (middle) lug Less treble loss as volume is lowered, with more interaction between volume and tone controls; lowering tone can also reduce volume.

These are circuit tendencies described by technical sources, not results from a controlled comparison or a guarantee of a preferred sound. Rockinger also notes the stronger interaction between the controls in ’50s wiring.

What you need—and what you may not need

For the Les Paul-style circuit covered by these sources, 0.022 µF (22 nF) is a common tone-capacitor value. The key change is the capacitor’s connection point, so a sound, suitable existing capacitor may be reusable; rewiring does not automatically require a new one. A Guitar World account of a Gibson Junior modification describes replacing the factory capacitor and brown jumper with a capacitor in the ’50s-style arrangement, but that is one guitar-specific example, not a universal parts requirement. The example used a paper-in-oil Bumblebee replica; the cited sources do not establish that this material is necessary for the wiring behavior. Guitar World and Seymour Duncan describe players using different capacitor materials and values.

A soldering iron is the tool mentioned in the Guitar World example. If you are replacing the whole control assembly rather than changing one connection, a pre-wired harness is an alternative, but it costs more and must fit the guitar. Rockinger’s listed long-shaft harness includes four CTS 500k split-shaft pots, a Switchcraft mono input jack, two 22 nF Orange Drop capacitors, and a wiring diagram; check the current listing and confirm shaft length and cavity fit before buying. Check the guitar before following a diagram

The cited diagrams and explanations focus on Les Paul-style passive circuits. Other guitars can have different pot layouts and wiring, so do not assume a Les Paul diagram applies directly to your instrument.

  1. Identify the guitar’s actual circuit and locate its volume and tone pots.
  2. Check where the tone capacitor currently connects and note the existing component values before moving any wires.
  3. Use a diagram that matches your guitar’s layout. If the circuit differs from the Les Paul-style arrangement described here, get a model-specific diagram or help from a qualified repairer rather than guessing at lug positions.

Is the change worth making?

Consider ’50s wiring if you often lower your guitar’s volume and want to retain more treble, and you are comfortable with the resulting volume-and-tone interaction. Stay with modern wiring if you prefer its more independent control feel or its tendency to maintain overall volume as you roll back the volume pot. The sources describe a control-response change, not an objective improvement or a guaranteed way to make a guitar sound vintage.
