Blizzard’s StarCraft II patch 5.0.17 PTR notes reverse most of the balance changes from 5.0.16, returning the game toward the 5.0.15 ruleset while changing several economy values. Blizzard said it wanted more time for the meta to develop and plans to try new changes in a later patch. The notes describe a public test realm build, not confirmation that the update has reached live servers.

What changed in patch 5.0.17?

Blizzard characterized 5.0.17 as a rollback of “most balance changes,” not a complete reversal of every change or all patch content. The notes return to the 5.0.15 balance baseline, while the contemporaneous announcement says the updated map pool and bug fixes remain. The rollback should therefore be read as a balance adjustment rather than a wholesale removal of everything introduced in the intervening update. Blizzard’s 5.0.17 PTR notes are the source for the listed settings; the description of retained content comes from the forum post sharing the announcement.

Economy and opening pace

The clearest numerical changes affect the opening economy. Blizzard’s 2026 patch notes set the starting worker count at 12 instead of 8 and revise mineral and gas settings as follows. These are game configuration values, not population or performance statistics.

Setting 5.0.17 PTR value Comparison value
Starting workers 12 8
Large mineral patch 1,800 1,600
Small mineral patch 900 1,100
Default Vespene geyser 2,250 2,000
Default gas per base 5,000 4,500

These values are stated in Blizzard’s 5.0.17 notes as the PTR changes; the comparison figures are the corresponding prior values. The worker count is the most visible opening adjustment, while the patch and gas quantities change the resources available through a game.

#1 Best Overall
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
  • Fast-paced, hard-hitting, tightly balanced competitive real-time strategy gameplay that recaptures and improves on the original game
  • Three completely distinct races: Protoss, Terran, and Zerg
  • Units and gameplay mechanics distinguish each race
  • 3D-graphics engine with support for visual effects and massive unit and army sizes
  • Full multiplayer support, with competitive features and matchmaking utilities available through Battle.net

Race and unit balance

The rollback also covers balance changes involving Zerg, Protoss, and Terran. Blizzard’s 5.0.17 notes describe the target as 5.0.15, whose official notes list race-specific changes as well as bug fixes. Because Blizzard says “most” changes are being reversed, it would be misleading to assume every individual 5.0.16 adjustment was undone. For exact unit-by-unit comparisons, consult the 5.0.15 notes alongside the 5.0.17 PTR notes.

Why is Blizzard reversing the changes?

Blizzard said it wanted to experiment with a new direction, particularly around workers, and then allow the meta—the strategies and counter-strategies players develop—to settle before judging the results. In the developer’s note accompanying 5.0.17, Blizzard wrote: “Our intention was to try something new, particularly with workers, and needed time to let the meta develop in order to ensure the most accurate feedback was being considered.”

The new balance direction drew critical feedback, according to Blizzard representative Blizz_Elliott. In a public Reddit comment in the 5.0.17 PTR discussion, the representative said reverting the changes was the best option for addressing that feedback while shifting new adjustments to the patch after 5.0.17. That explains Blizzard’s stated rationale; it does not establish that all players shared the same view.

Is patch 5.0.17 live?

The announcement places 5.0.17 on the public test realm for bug testing before a planned move to live servers. Blizzard said testing would run for a few days, but the announcement does not establish whether deployment has since occurred. Treat 5.0.17 as a PTR build unless you confirm its availability in the live game or a later Blizzard update.

What happens after 5.0.17?

Blizz_Elliott said work on the next PTR was already underway, but Blizzard could not share a launch date. The representative described the plan as addressing the critical feedback by reverting much of the current patch and focusing new changes in a patch after 5.0.17. No timing for that next PTR was provided, so there is no confirmed schedule to plan around.
