Florence Pugh discussed the allegations in a Cornell University sexual-assault case on The View while promoting Netflix’s East of Eden. She said the case left her scared, anxious and angry, and described Instagram as censoring her post. Reporting indicates the original post received a sensitive-content warning; a later report said Meta removed that label after review. The available accounts do not establish that Instagram deliberately suppressed the post’s reach.

What Florence Pugh said about the case and Instagram

On The View, Pugh spoke about the Cornell case and the broader fear surrounding sexual violence. Variety reported her saying, “Rape is something that lives. The fear of it lives in our bodies.” She also criticized what she viewed as the censorship of women who speak about sexual violence. TheWrap reported her remark: “Instagram censored me when I said it, which is also just another shock that women are censored.”

Those are reported quotations from coverage of the appearance, not independently obtained transcript excerpts. Pugh’s comments combined her reaction to the allegations with her account of what happened to her Instagram posts; the two should not be treated as the same kind of evidence.

Why did Instagram block Florence Pugh’s post about Cornell?

“Blocked” is Pugh’s characterization of Instagram’s handling of her message, not a confirmed account of a complete takedown. Variety reported that the original post remained visible with a sensitive-content warning and that a follow-up post also carried a warning. IBTimes UK later reported that Meta removed the sensitive-content label after review.

The cited reporting does not show how many people saw either post while the warning was in place, and Meta reportedly did not disclose the distribution impact or confirm that it deliberately reduced the posts’ reach. A warning label, removal of a label, and reduced distribution are distinct actions. The reports establish the warning and later review, but do not establish intentional reach suppression.

What is the Cornell case?

A former Cornell student identified as Jane Doe in court documents sued the university and seven former students. Her civil lawsuit alleges that members of Chi Phi sexually assaulted her at the fraternity’s Cornell residence in October 2024 after she was given drugs and alcohol and became incapacitated. These are allegations, not findings of guilt.

The defendants’ accounts differ. The Associated Press reported that some disputed the woman’s account or said the sexual activity and drug use were consensual; lawyers for two men denied that their clients participated. The claims have not been adjudicated. “Cornell 7” is an online label used for the seven accused men, not an official case designation.

How the university inquiry differs from the criminal investigation

Cornell conducted a disciplinary inquiry separate from the criminal investigation. According to AP, documents filed in court and reviewed by the news agency described 50 interviews with 32 witnesses, 12 days of hearings and a 99-page report. Cornell said some students were expelled or suspended but withheld specific sanction details. Those figures describe the university process; they are not a court judgment or the outcome of the criminal investigation.

Accounts of what was reported to campus police and what investigators reviewed are contested. AP reported that the woman told campus police she was certain she had been raped. The district attorney, by contrast, said the police summary he reviewed did not contain allegations of forced sex or drugging against her will. Cornell’s inquiry included interviews, hearings and a report, according to AP; the school did not disclose the individual sanctions.

Who is overseeing the criminal investigation now?

The criminal investigation initially closed without charges after Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten reviewed a police summary. He later reopened it after the civil lawsuit brought additional information into public view. No criminal charges had been filed as of AP’s October 3, 2026, explainer.

On October 1, 2026, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul appointed Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor to take over oversight. AP reported that James described the investigation as a monthslong process with no predetermined outcome. Hochul said, “The young woman at the center of this case deserves to know that every fact will be examined and justice pursued.” The investigation remains unresolved.
