In James Bentley’s playful PC Gamer comparison, the Glorious Model O Eternal takes first place with a 93.5% “James score.” The 8BitDo Retro R8 follows at 92%—and Bentley says it is the mouse on his desk. Those results answer a narrow question about price, weight and PC Gamer review scores, not which mouse is best for every gamer.
Which gaming mouse ranked first?
Bentley’s 2026 comparison puts the Glorious Model O Eternal first, at 93.5%. The 8BitDo Retro R8 is second, at 92%. Bentley wrote: “Second place is the 8BitDo Retro R8, which coincidentally happens to be the mouse I keep on my desk.”
The MCHOSE K7 V2 Ultra+ scored 80.5%, followed by the MCHOSE L7 Pro+ at 80%. PC Gamer’s narrative calls the two MCHOSE models joint third, but the displayed scores differ by half a point; the table below preserves those figures rather than treating them as an exact tie.
How did the “James score” work?
Bentley used each mouse’s reported MSRP and weight to calculate grams per dollar, then mapped the comparison set onto a 0–100 price-to-weight value scale. He averaged that value percentage with the mouse’s PC Gamer review score to produce the final “James score.”

Because review scores are part of the formula, the comparison includes only mice PC Gamer had reviewed. The MSRP figures are the inputs reported in Bentley’s article, not verified current store prices. What the ranking says—and what it does not
It rewards a particular kind of value
A low cost per gram means a mouse provides more mass for each dollar in its listed MSRP. That is the comparison’s “price-to-gram” idea, but extra weight is not a measure of gaming performance, comfort or build quality. The final score also incorporates PC Gamer’s review rating, so neither the price-to-weight value nor the final score should be read as a standardized measure of overall quality.
Rank #2
- Next-gen 12,000 DPI HERO optical sensor delivers unrivaled gaming performance, accuracy and power efficiency
- Advanced LIGHTSPEED wireless gaming mouse for super-fast 1 ms response time and faster than wired performance
- Ultra-long battery life gives you up to 250 hours of continuous gaming on a single AA battery
- Lightweight mechanical design and classic shape for maximum maneuverability, durability and comfort
- Compact, portable design with convenient built-in storage for included USB wireless receiver
Ultralight mice can lose points
Bentley acknowledges that the formula tends to favor cheaper, heavier mice and can penalize ultralight models. A buyer who prizes low weight may therefore prefer a mouse that ranks lower here; the score reflects the formula’s priorities, not that buyer’s.
The field is limited
This is a comparison of the mice PC Gamer had reviewed for the article, not every gaming mouse available. Its result is most useful as an entertaining way to compare those listed models using the chosen inputs—not as a universal buying guide or a guarantee that the quoted MSRP is still available.
