Babcock and UK uncrewed ground vehicle specialist Digital Concepts Engineering (DCE) signed a memorandum of understanding on 17 September 2026 to explore working together on uncrewed ground systems. The proposed cooperation could cover development, manufacturing, integration and support for UK and international customers; the announcement is not a procurement award or a commitment to deliver a fielded system.
What the MoU proposes
Babcock says the companies will explore combining their capabilities to develop, manufacture, integrate and support uncrewed ground systems. The potential support offer could include training, logistics, infrastructure and operational support, as well as systems integration. The announcement does not disclose the MoU’s duration, financial terms, exclusivity, customer commitments or milestones. It establishes exploratory cooperation, not a funded programme or delivery schedule.
What Babcock and DCE bring
Babcock describes its role as contributing manufacturing, systems integration and through-life support. DCE brings expertise in uncrewed ground vehicles (UGVs) and robotic control systems. The named technologies: X-Series and Marionette
The announcement names DCE’s X-Series UGV and Marionette Universal Control System as central to the potential collaboration. They serve different roles: X-Series is a dedicated vehicle platform, while Marionette is intended to add remote or autonomous control to existing vehicles.

The two technologies should not be treated as directly comparable alternatives: one is a purpose-built UGV, and the other is a control system for adapting vehicles. The announcement gives no comparable figures for cost, range, speed, endurance or validated performance, so it does not support ranking them on those measures.

What was shown at DVD 2026
Babcock says the partnership was demonstrated at DVD 2026 by integrating its digital ammunition rack onto an X-Series UGV. The company said the demonstration illustrated potential applications in autonomous resupply for mortar and artillery systems, as well as remote monitoring and management of ammunition and other logistics supplies. This was an event demonstration, not documented evidence of a field trial, customer acceptance or operational deployment. The announcement does not establish that the system has been adopted or is in service.

What is still unknown
The public announcements do not establish the MoU’s commercial terms or whether a customer has committed to a programme. They also leave open the level of autonomy and vehicle compatibility offered by Marionette, and provide no independent test report for X-Series performance. Electronics Weekly’s report covers the announcement but does not supply independent performance testing or the agreement’s terms.
Louise Atkinson, Chief Executive of Babcock’s Land and Mission Systems business, said: “Autonomous systems are changing the way modern militaries operate – and as experts in manufacturing and systems integration, Babcock can leverage these capabilities to deliver operational advantage.” This is Babcock’s characterization of the opportunity, not independent analysis of the systems or the MoU’s likely outcome.
