F-Droid’s 2.0 app is a substantial redesign, and its release is evidence that the project is actively maintaining its Android client. It is not proof that F-Droid will exist indefinitely. As of October 3, 2026, the new client was still in beta, while F-Droid continued to recommend its previous stable release.

What F-Droid 2.0 changes for Android users

F-Droid describes 2.0 as a complete redesign and its largest app update in ten years. The project says development took more than a year, with a staged rollout beginning after 14 test releases. The app was rebuilt with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, which F-Droid says provides a better foundation for maintenance and contributions. F-Droid’s September 24, 2026 announcement presents the release as a new foundation, not simply a visual refresh.

Finding apps

The redesigned navigation centers on Discover, Search, and My Apps. Discover highlights new, recently updated, and popular apps; Search now includes app descriptions and translations, not just names. Filters can narrow results by category, device compatibility, and anti-features. Settings and repository management are accessible from the upper-right area. These interface details are described in It’s FOSS’s October 1 walkthrough, alongside the feature list on F-Droid’s package page.

Installing and updating

F-Droid says users approve an installation before its download begins, and the app can handle multiple downloads and updates at once. It also adds notices for problems such as a signing-key change. Update checks now run in the background by default; users who prefer control can still use manual and more finely configured update options, and existing preferences are respected. F-Droid’s update-check explanation describes the change.

Appearance and sharing

Material You color theming is optional, and list filtering has been improved. Nearby sharing, however, was not ready for the initial 2.0 release. F-Droid says it is developing a replacement based on improved connection methods; its absence at launch does not mean the project has abandoned the feature. The release announcement discusses the ongoing work.

Should you switch to 2.0 now?

The answer depends on whether you want to try a beta or stay with the suggested stable build. F-Droid’s package listing checked October 3, 2026 showed 2.0.1 as a beta, added September 29, requiring Android 7.0 or newer. It listed 1.23.2, added February 19, 2026, as the suggested stable version. Those are dated availability details, not a promise that the labels will remain unchanged.

F-Droid 2.0.1 Beta; added September 29, 2026; Android 7.0 or newer, according to F-Droid’s package page. Try the redesigned discovery, search, and installation flow, while accepting beta status. Nearby sharing was not included in the initial release.
F-Droid 1.23.2 Suggested stable build; added February 19, 2026, according to F-Droid’s package page. Stay on the version F-Droid was recommending as stable at that time.

For either version, use F-Droid’s official package page and client flow rather than an arbitrary APK mirror. F-Droid warns that installing an APK directly does not provide update notifications and is a less secure download method than installing and using the client.

Why the release suggests F-Droid is still active

A year-plus rebuild, multiple test releases, and a staged rollout represent concrete investment in the Android client. F-Droid also says it plans continued work on performance, accessibility, app discovery, and usability, and invites contributions through feedback, testing, translation, documentation, and code. The project’s own words are measured: “F-Droid 2.0 represents a major milestone, but it is not the end of the story. Rebuilding the app has given us a stronger foundation, yet there is still plenty of work ahead.” The announcement supports the interpretation that F-Droid is building and maintaining its software now; a release cannot guarantee its long-term survival. The sources cited here establish no independent performance, adoption, or reliability figures.

How the Android verification debate fits in

F-Droid’s release does not show that Google’s developer-verification policy has shut it down. The policy debate is contested, and the two organizations describe its implications differently.

Google’s stated position

In a September 2025 Android Developers Blog post, Google said verification is intended to protect users and developers from bad actors. Google said verified developers could distribute apps through direct downloads or third-party stores, and described a free account route for hobbyists and small-scale creators distributing to a limited number of devices. These are Google’s assurances and description of the policy, not an independent assessment of how it will affect every developer. Google’s announcement gives its account.

F-Droid’s objections

In an October 28, 2025 response, F-Droid argued that registration involving identity, app identifiers, signing-key evidence, and Google approval could undermine open app distribution. F-Droid disputes Google’s reassurance. That is F-Droid’s interpretation of the policy’s implications, not evidence that the policy has already prevented F-Droid from distributing its client. F-Droid’s response sets out its concerns.

The disagreement is clear in the question F-Droid raised: “Does this mean sideloading is going away on Android?” F-Droid quoted Google’s answer: “Absolutely not. Sideloading is fundamental to Android and it is not going away.” F-Droid then disputed that answer. The quote is Google’s position as reproduced by F-Droid, not F-Droid’s own reassurance.
