Ronaldo tied his decision to the coach’s press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) president Pedro Proença. He did not announce that he was retiring from Portugal, so whether he will play for the national team again remains unconfirmed.
Why did Ronaldo leave Portugal’s training camp?
The immediate context was a dispute over his role in the team. Ronaldo had stayed on the bench for all of Portugal’s 2–1 win over Norway, although he warmed up. Jesus said he had chosen not to bring him on and later said Ronaldo would not start against Denmark.
Ronaldo left the camp in Copenhagen on September 30, 2026, after Jesus’s press conference. He said his departure followed that press conference and a conversation with Proença. The FPF confirmed that Ronaldo had left but did not give a reason; it said preparations for the Denmark and Norway matches would continue with the other 24 squad members.
That sequence supports describing the departure as connected to Ronaldo’s selection and handling. It does not establish what was said privately or provide a complete account of either side’s position. Jesus said there had been “no incident whatsoever” and that choosing not to substitute Ronaldo was his decision.

What did Ronaldo say about his decision?
Al Jazeera reported Ronaldo’s statement: “Following the national team manager’s press conference, and after a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the national team’s training camp.” He added that he would explain his reasons “in due course.” He did not give those detailed reasons in the reported statement.
Did Ronaldo quit Portugal?
No permanent retirement was announced in the statement described by the reports. EFE reported that Ronaldo’s message did not amount to a definitive retirement from the national team. His future status was therefore unresolved in reporting published on October 1, 2026.

There is also an important distinction between a last World Cup and a last Portugal appearance. FIFA reported that Ronaldo had said the 2026 World Cup would be his last; that statement alone does not establish that he will never play for Portugal again.

It is not confirmed. The public statements reported at the time neither guaranteed a return nor announced that he had ended his international career. A later direct statement or squad announcement could clarify his plans, but the cited reports leave the question open.

AFP reported that Ronaldo had 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal. Those career totals provide context for the significance of his departure, but they do not determine whether he will return.
