What kind of game is River City Survivors?
Arc System Works describes River City Survivors: Downtown of the Dead as a “survivors-like” action game. Players fight large zombie hordes, gain experience, level up, and select randomized upgrades. The official descriptions do not establish that the game uses a side-scrolling format.
Arc System Works America says upgrade choices vary between runs and can include skill attacks, projectiles, and stat boosts. The studio describes the action as “mow[ing] down screen-filling swarms of zombies” in its September 8, 2026 announcement.

As a run progresses, you gain EXP and level up, choosing from randomized upgrades. This makes upgrade selection part of each run rather than a fixed sequence.

Persistent equipment
Separately, the game has six gear slots: Gakuran (school jacket), Bontan (baggy pants), belt, shoes, accessories, and inner buttons. Arc System Works says gear can provide special effects and permanently boost stats, creating a longer-term progression layer alongside run-specific choices.
Which characters and allies can you use?
Apple and Arc System Works describe a roster of more than 20 playable characters. Apple specifically names series characters Kunio and Riki. The game also lets you bring up to two NPC allies, according to both the developer and Apple.

When did it launch, and which devices are listed?
Arc System Works announced October 1, 2026 as the Apple Arcade launch date. Apple included the game among its October 1 Arcade additions, but the App Store result captured on October 3 still displayed “Expected Oct 1, 2026.” That listing status does not confirm whether it is currently downloadable, so consult the App Store page for the latest availability.
The App Store listing names iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision, and Apple TV as supported Apple platforms. These are storefront listing details and may change. The listing also identifies Arc System Works as the developer, gives the game a 9+ age rating, and shows English plus 13 more languages in its Mac search snapshot.

Does River City Survivors support a controller?
Yes. The App Store listing marks the game as controller-supported, but it does not identify compatible controller models or specify controller compatibility by platform. If you plan to use one, check that the controller works with your device and operating system. Touch controls are another option on devices with touchscreens.
