One worker was still reported missing at that time. The workers were preparing the route and camp before foreign climbers arrived.
What happened at Himlung Himal?
The avalanche hit the base camp on Himlung Himal, a 7,126-metre peak in Manang district, on September 26. Nepali expedition workers and support staff had gone ahead to prepare camps and fix ropes. Foreign climbers had not yet reached the site when the avalanche struck, according to Reuters and Al Jazeera.
How many people died, and what is the search status?
By October 1, rescuers had recovered 15 bodies, and one high-altitude worker remained missing in reports published October 1–2. The Kathmandu Post reported that eight bodies were recovered on October 1, bringing the cumulative death toll to 15. Reuters attributed the recovery count to Tul Singh Gurung, president of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association.
The association said recovery work had been temporarily concluded because of continuing mountain hazards, while leaving open further efforts when conditions allow. The Associated Press reported its statement on October 2: “Due to continuing mountain hazards, recovery efforts have been temporarily concluded,” and, “Further efforts may be possible when conditions allow.” The missing worker’s ultimate fate was not established in the reports cited here, so the status may change with later updates. Why was the rescue difficult?
Searchers faced snow and hazardous mountain conditions. The Kathmandu Post reported that bad weather initially prevented helicopters from reaching the peak and slowed rescue work. Al Jazeera, citing AFP and Reuters reporting, said more than four metres of snow lay over the tents. These conditions also informed the guide association’s decision to pause recovery efforts; the reports do not establish when another search attempt will be possible.
What caused the avalanche?
The reports cited here do not establish a specific trigger or provide findings from a completed official investigation. Severe weather and dangerous conditions were reported during rescue operations, but that does not demonstrate what caused the avalanche. Any explanation of its trigger would be speculation on the available information.
