Walmart’s light-up digital shelf labels can flash to point shoppers to an item through the Walmart app, while employees can use the same LEDs to find products for stocking or online orders. The light guides people to a shelf location; it does not set the item’s price or guarantee the item is in stock.
How Shop to Light works for shoppers
Walmart calls the shopper feature Shop to Light. When a shopper asks for help finding an item in the Walmart app, the store system signals the product’s shelf location and the LED built into that digital label flashes. Walmart says the system “simply tells the store system which product location to light up so the customer can find the item more easily.”
The light is a location aid, not an inventory confirmation. It identifies where the product is assigned on the shelf, but Walmart’s description does not say that a flashing label guarantees the item is physically there.
How employees use the same labels
The label LEDs also support two employee workflows. The person or process that initiates the light, and the task it supports, differ from Shop to Light:

Walmart described the employee uses in its digital shelf label overview; its current Shop to Light page also outlines all three workflows.
What the digital labels do—and do not do—to prices
Digital shelf labels are electronic displays at the shelf edge that replace paper tags. Walmart says they show prices approved through its central pricing process; the labels themselves do not decide prices. Associates review approved changes, and Walmart says updates are typically made outside shopping hours.

Activating Shop to Light does not change a price. Walmart says prices are the same for all customers in a given store and do not vary with demand, time of day, or who is shopping. Those are Walmart’s statements about its pricing process, not an independent audit of every store’s systems.
What Walmart says about privacy
Walmart says the labels are closed-system displays that do not collect shopper information or track shoppers, and that they have no cameras or microphones. These are the retailer’s privacy assurances; the cited company pages do not provide an independent technical inspection of the system.

Where Walmart has deployed the labels
In a March 2, 2026 update, Walmart said roughly 2,300 U.S. locations were already using digital shelf labels and forecast chain-wide deployment within the next year. That figure is a dated company-reported status, and the chain-wide rollout was a forecast—not confirmation that deployment was complete. Walmart’s October 2026 Shop to Light announcement describes the feature but gives no final store count.
Walmart’s March 2026 post also described a Walmart store as carrying more than 120,000 items. That is the company’s figure, and it helps explain why location guidance could be useful, but the cited pages do not report a measured reduction in shoppers’ search time or a specific satisfaction result for Shop to Light.

How the labels fit into Walmart’s store operations
Walmart first described its digital shelf label expansion in a June 2024 account by associate Daniela Boscan, who said the company planned to reach 2,300 stores by 2026. She identified Vusion Group as the label developer. The earlier target has since been superseded as a rollout-status update by Walmart’s March 2026 count.
Boscan also wrote that a price change that had taken an associate two days to update could take minutes with the system. That is one associate’s account of the change at her store, rather than a universal or independently verified timing result. For shoppers, the clearer benefit Walmart now describes is the flashing location aid; for employees, the same technology supports stocking and online-order picking.
