First, check whether you are registered and confirm your state or territorial election office’s rules. Registration deadlines, voter ID, polling places, early voting, and mail-ballot procedures vary by jurisdiction; there is no single nationwide deadline or checklist for the 2026 midterms. Start with USAGov’s voter registration deadlines page or your state or local election office.

Am I registered to vote?

Check your registration with your state or local election office. In every state except North Dakota, voters need to register. General eligibility rules include U.S. citizenship, being at least 18 by Election Day, and meeting residency requirements, but states set the details.

Check your record if you have moved, changed your name, want to change party affiliation, or have not voted in four years. Many states allow registration online, by mail, or in person. The National Mail Voter Registration Form is available in 21 languages and can be used in every state except North Dakota, New Hampshire, and Wyoming; confirm the correct submission method and deadline locally. See the U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s voter FAQs.

When is the voter registration deadline?

Each state sets its own deadline. Some allow registration on Election Day; others close registration as much as 30 days before an election. The 2026 deadline for your election depends on where you live, so look it up early using USAGov’s deadline guide and confirm with your election office. Do not assume a deadline from another state applies to you.

Where do I vote?

All states offer in-person voting on Election Day, but where you can cast a ballot depends on local rules. Some jurisdictions assign voters to a specific polling place; others use vote centers where eligible voters in the jurisdiction can vote. Check your official polling location and hours before you go, since they are not universal. The USAGov Election Day guide links to official voting information.

Federal elections do not offer online voting. To see the candidates and state or local ballot issues that apply to you, look for an official sample ballot or voter guide through your election office.

Do I need an ID?

Voter ID rules are set by states. Most states require identification for in-person voting, but the accepted documents and any alternatives vary. Check your state’s official instructions before Election Day rather than relying on a nationwide ID list. The USAGov Election Day guide points voters to state-specific rules.

Can I vote early?

Many states allow in-person voting before Election Day. Depending on the jurisdiction, early voting may take place at an election office or at designated polling locations. The dates, hours, locations, and procedures are local; find them through the EAC’s voter information and state links or your election office.

Can I vote by mail?

Mail-voting options differ. Some states require an excuse to vote absentee, others let any eligible voter request a ballot, and some send ballots automatically through vote-by-mail programs. In most states, voters request a ballot for each election; some allow recurring absentee-ballot enrollment. Check your jurisdiction’s rules before applying. The USAGov absentee and mail voting guide explains the main variations.

If you have moved, update your registration at your new address before requesting an absentee or mail ballot. Some jurisdictions offer drop boxes or in-person ballot return, but availability and requirements vary.

When does my mail ballot have to be postmarked or received?

Check both the application deadline and the ballot-return deadline. Depending on state law, a ballot may need to be postmarked by a set date or received by the election office by that date; a postmark by Election Day is not a universal rule. Follow the instructions that come with your ballot, including any witness or notary requirements, and check whether postage is prepaid. The EAC relays USPS’s recommendation to mail a ballot at least one week before the state deadline to allow time for delivery.

Many states provide ballot tracking online. If your jurisdiction offers it, use the official service to check whether your ballot was received. Election officials can see whether you voted, but not how you voted. For local return options and rules, consult the USAGov mail-voting guide and your election office.

Can I vote if I moved?

Update your registration with your new address and check the registration deadline that applies there. Your polling place, ballot, and mail-voting options are based on jurisdiction-specific rules. If you have moved and want to vote by mail, USAGov says to update your registration at the new address before requesting a ballot. Contact your state or local election office for guidance about your individual record.

What if I am a military or overseas voter?

Military members and families stationed away from their voting residence, as well as U.S. citizens living abroad who previously lived in the United States, can vote absentee. U.S.-born citizens who have never lived in the United States may or may not qualify; rules depend on the state where their parent or legal guardian last resided.

Eligible military and overseas voters can use the Federal Post Card Application to register and request an absentee ballot in one step. Confirm voting-residence and state-specific requirements through the Federal Voting Assistance Program and your election office; see USAGov’s absentee voting guide.

Does party affiliation affect how I vote?

States differ on whether voters declare or register a party. Some require party registration to participate in a primary; others do not track party affiliation. In general elections, you may choose any candidate regardless of party affiliation. Check your state’s rules if you want to vote in a primary or change your party record; the EAC voter FAQs explain the variation.
