It pairs cable assemblies with PCB-mounted connectors, including surface-mount and edge-launch options. Selecting the right version means matching the interface, port spacing, termination and board launch, then checking the exact part’s datasheet: published frequency limits vary by configuration.
What Mini-D RF connects
Amphenol SV Microwave describes Mini-D RF as a rugged, lightweight aluminum D-shaped housing for multiport RF connections. The product range includes harnessed cable assemblies and PCB-mounted connectors. The manufacturer positions the system for test and instrumentation, bench-top testing and evaluation boards, automated test equipment, airborne radar, and military and aerospace applications.
“Board-to-board” needs a little qualification: the described configurations include a cable assembly mating to a PCB-mounted connector, as well as PCB mounting choices. Do not assume every Mini-D RF option is a rigid, direct board-to-board adapter; verify the topology shown for the specific part. Amphenol SV Microwave Mini-D RF product family and its SMPM family page show the system and available components.
Choose the interface and port spacing
The system is offered with SMPS and SMPM interfaces. These are distinct interface types, not interchangeable labels; use the mating geometry and selected part specifications to ensure compatibility. The manufacturer lists the following port-to-port spacing on its undated product-family page:

Those values are family-level information, not a substitute for the dimensions of a particular connector. The SMPM family page also lists an eight-port ganged cable assembly and PCB mating connector halves; verify the exact arrangement and part number before laying out a board.
Select the PCB attachment and cable termination
PCB launch: edge-launch or surface-mount
Mini-D RF PCB connectors are available in edge-launch and surface-mount versions. Choose based on the board construction and layout, then follow the selected part’s current datasheet and land pattern. A family-page description alone does not establish the footprint, launch geometry or assembly requirements for every part.

Cable termination: frequency limits differ
The manufacturer connection-system datasheet lists these maximum frequencies by cable-assembly termination. They are configuration-specific maxima, not one universal rating for every Mini-D RF assembly.

These maxima come from the Amphenol SV Microwave Mini-D connection-system datasheet. Confirm the exact assembly, termination and test conditions in the applicable current datasheet before designing to a frequency limit.

Read family-level frequency claims carefully
The Mini-D family page gives a typical series frequency value of 40 GHz and also describes performance “to 67 GHz.” Those are broad family-level statements, not a guarantee that an arbitrary cable assembly, termination or PCB connector will operate to either figure. The datasheet’s termination-specific maxima above are more useful for initial selection, but the exact part specification and measurement conditions govern a design.
The manufacturer’s SMPM family page states a 50-ohm impedance and provides interface-specific mating-cycle, force, misalignment and environmental specifications. Treat those as family specifications rather than assuming that every item in the family has identical ratings. Check the chosen part documentation for the limits that apply.

Check mechanical integration and handling
Manufacturer material describes recessed interfaces intended to protect the contacts, a keyed D-shaped housing to help prevent mismating, and thumbscrews for mating and demating. These features support handling of a multiport assembly, but they do not remove the need to check access, alignment and retention in the actual enclosure.
The system datasheet gives nominal insertion force of 9 lb and withdrawal force of 7 lb for mating an 8-position cable connector to a PCB mount, and recommends 12 in-oz mating/board-mount torque. These figures apply to the stated configuration; verify they are relevant to the selected part before using them in a mechanical design.

A practical selection sequence
- Define the connection topology. Establish whether the design uses a harnessed cable assembly mating to a PCB connector or another arrangement documented for the selected part.
- Match the interface. Choose SMPS or SMPM based on compatible mating parts; do not assume they mate with one another.
- Check density and dimensions. Use the listed 0.110-inch SMPS or 0.165-inch SMPM spacing as family-level guidance, then confirm the selected part’s footprint and mating geometry.
- Choose the PCB launch. Select edge-launch or surface-mount to suit the board layout, and implement the exact manufacturer land pattern.
- Choose the cable termination for the required frequency. Compare the termination-specific maximums, then confirm the complete part’s operating limits and test conditions.
- Verify mechanical and environmental requirements. Check the selected part’s mating cycles, force, torque, misalignment and environmental specifications rather than carrying family values across variants.
- Design from the exact part datasheet. Confirm the full part number, cable, termination, PCB connector and current documentation before releasing the design.
