Hindustan Times reported eight Indian holidays or observances falling on Saturdays or Sundays in 2027: six on Saturday and two on Sunday. Whether any of them means less paid time off depends on the applicable state calendar and your employer’s policy; the dates alone do not establish a company-wide leave rule.
Which holidays in 2027 fall on a weekend?
The following dates are the list reported by Hindustan Times in a story updated October 2, 2026. The report cautions that holiday calendars vary across states, so treat this as a reported list—not a universal calendar for every Indian state or workplace.
| Observance | Reported date in 2027 | Weekday |
|---|---|---|
| Maha Shivratri | March 6 | Saturday |
| Maharashtra Day | May 1 | Saturday |
| Independence Day | August 15 | Sunday |
| Ganesh Chaturthi | September 4 | Saturday |
| Gandhi Jayanti | October 2 | Saturday |
| Dussehra | October 9 | Saturday |
| Guru Nanak Jayanti | November 14 | Sunday |
| Christmas | December 25 | Saturday |

Will employees lose paid holidays when they fall on weekends?
Not necessarily. The weekday on which an observance falls does not by itself say whether an employee receives a substitute day off or how many paid holidays their employer provides. Hindustan Times reports social-media comments suggesting that some employers use a fixed holiday allowance, but those comments are anecdotal, not representative evidence of corporate policy.

For a practical answer, check your employer’s published 2027 holiday list and leave policy. Look for whether a weekend observance is replaced with another day, whether employees choose from floating holidays, and whether the policy differs for weekend-shift staff. Also check the relevant state or local calendar; the report does not establish that every listed observance is adopted in every state.
Does a substitute-day rule apply in India?
The U.S. federal “in lieu of” rule is not an Indian private-employer rule. For relevant U.S. federal employees on a Monday-to-Friday workweek, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management says a Saturday holiday is observed on Friday and a Sunday holiday on Monday. That guidance applies to the U.S. federal system only; it cannot determine leave entitlements at an Indian company. See the OPM federal holidays schedule and its in-lieu determination guidance.
