Synopsys and OpenAI have agreed to develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialized model intended to operate Synopsys electronic design automation (EDA) tools. Announced September 30, 2026, the multi-year agreement is a development and commercialization partnership—not a public product launch. The companies have not announced pricing, general availability, or independently validated results.
What is GPT-Synopsys?
GPT-Synopsys is a planned model for working with Synopsys EDA software used in semiconductor design. Under the agreement, OpenAI will license Synopsys EDA tools for development, while the companies pursue joint research and development, go-to-market activity, and a shared revenue framework. The announcement describes a system under development, not a finished product. Synopsys’s September 30, 2026 announcement is the source for the partnership’s stated scope.
How is the model intended to use EDA tools?
The proposed approach goes beyond asking a general-purpose chatbot questions about chip design. The model is intended to run EDA tools, interpret their output, make or propose design changes, and repeat the process against engineering objectives. Synopsys and OpenAI describe goals including optimizing power, performance, and area (PPA), closing timing, and closing verification.
In practice, such a workflow would need to connect a design objective to tool runs, diagnose results, and decide what to try next. The announcement outlines that intended loop, but does not publish a technical specification, a list of supported tools or tasks, or measured evidence that GPT-Synopsys can complete those loops successfully.

Does this mean AI will automate chip design?
No. The announcement presents AI as a way to help engineers explore alternatives and iterate on tool-driven tasks, not as a replacement for engineering judgment or sign-off. Synopsys’s broader description of its agentic approach says engineers retain high-value architecture, trade-off, and risk decisions. A model that can execute or interpret tools would still need human review of the resulting design and its risks.
That distinction matters because a tool producing a promising PPA or verification result is not, by itself, proof of a successful chip. The September announcement reports no GPT-Synopsys productivity measurement, completed tapeout, or independent validation. Its benefits remain intended outcomes.
How would customers access it, and what happens to chip-design data?
The companies say the planned offering would run on OpenAI-hosted infrastructure, interoperate with customers’ agent-harness systems, and integrate with Synopsys.ai and Synopsys Autopilot. They describe a bundle of compute, model, and software licenses. These are announced plans; the final product package and deployment details have not been specified publicly.
Synopsys and OpenAI also say customer data will not be used to train the model, will be encrypted in transit and at rest, and can be managed using configurable retention, audit, and permission controls. Those are company statements in the partnership announcement, not findings from an independent security audit. Organizations evaluating the eventual service will need to review the actual product terms and controls when they are published.

No public launch date, pricing, customer eligibility criteria, final package, or public purchase route was announced on September 30, 2026. Synopsys says early technology engagements with semiconductor customers are underway, but it did not name those customers. An early engagement is not the same as general availability.
How does the partnership fit Synopsys’s existing AI work?
Synopsys has described AI-assisted EDA work predating this deal. In its own account, it deployed DSO.ai for design-space optimization in 2018 and later expanded AI into implementation, verification, and testing. The company also describes assistants for tool and design questions, script analysis, and suggestions, as well as generative capabilities for RTL and verification tests. This history is Synopsys’s account of its technology and direction, not independent validation of GPT-Synopsys. Synopsys’s technical article on AI-driven design engineering provides that context.

A separate Synopsys–Microsoft–AMD effort
GPT-Synopsys is not the only announced work on agentic EDA. In a July 27, 2026 release, Synopsys said autonomous workflows developed with Microsoft and used by AMD were available for evaluation on Microsoft Discovery. The workflows addressed debug closure and implementation closure, including a Fusion Compiler implementation workflow on Azure. Synopsys reported early debug-cycle reductions of 25–40% for those evaluations. That company-reported figure belongs to the separate Microsoft-related effort; it is not a GPT-Synopsys result. Synopsys’s July 27, 2026 release describes the evaluation.
Commercial context
At its September 30, 2026 investor day, Synopsys described three ways customers might use AI for engineering: deploy Synopsys Autopilot, integrate Synopsys agents into a customer AI platform, or use frontier models adapted for specialized engineering. It characterized monetization across tools, agents, and platform as subscription- and consumption-based. That framing helps explain the broader commercial setting, but does not disclose GPT-Synopsys pricing or customer terms. Synopsys’s 2026 investor-day materials are the source for this context.

What is established—and what remains open?
- Established: Synopsys and OpenAI have a multi-year agreement to develop GPT-Synopsys; OpenAI is to license Synopsys EDA tools for development; and the companies plan joint go-to-market work with a shared revenue framework.
- Planned, not demonstrated: a model that operates tools and iterates on objectives such as PPA, timing closure, and verification closure.
- Not yet disclosed: public availability, pricing, eligibility, final packaging, and a purchase route.
- Not demonstrated in the announcement: measured productivity gains from GPT-Synopsys, successful tapeout, or independent performance and security validation.
For now, the announcement is most useful as a signal of where Synopsys and OpenAI intend to take AI-assisted chip design. It is not evidence that customers can buy the service today or that the proposed model has already delivered verified silicon.
