These five free courses offer different routes into AI agents: hands-on coding across several libraries, training inside a vendor ecosystem, structured reading, or lessons on production systems. There is no single best fit for everyone. Choose based on your coding experience, preferred learning format, and whether you want a particular platform or a completion credential.

Compare the five free AI agent courses

Course Format and focus Prerequisites or availability Credential
Hugging Face AI Agents Course Agent fundamentals, frameworks, use cases, and a final assignment; names smolagents, LlamaIndex, and LangGraph, with bonus material on function-calling fine-tuning and agent observability and evaluation. Basic Python and basic LLM knowledge. Requires a computer with internet access and a Hugging Face account, which the provider describes as free. Audit and certification paths; the provider describes certification as free.
Salesforce Trailhead AI Agent courses Interactive training with hands-on exercises, quizzes, and real-world scenarios, covering AI fundamentals, designing and building agents, applications, and projects in the Agentforce ecosystem. The reviewed page does not state a detailed course-by-course time commitment. Not stated on the reviewed page.
Cognizant Agent Academy Self-paced hub advertised as four tracks and 35+ lessons, from foundations to production-oriented topics. Practical development emphasizes Cognizant AI Lab’s open-source Neuro San framework. The provider says Agent Foundations is currently available; additional tracks and modules are coming soon. Advanced themes listed include integrations, testing, observability, debugging, and production systems. The provider describes certifications after final exams.
DAIR.AI Elements of AI Agents Text-based course listed as 30 lessons in five modules, covering agent concepts, reasoning, planning, uncertainty, tools, memory, and context. Positioned for developers, students, and curious readers. The reviewed page excerpt does not establish the amount of coding practice. Last updated June 2026, according to the provider. Certificate of completion.
Build-agents.dev Four-track curriculum on agent fundamentals, orchestration patterns, MCP, and production agents; topics include tool use, memory, multi-agent systems, state, reliability, evaluation, observability, deployment, and scaling. Advertises browser-based Python exercises through Pyodide. The reviewed pages do not state formal prerequisites. Not stated on the reviewed pages.

Which course fits your starting point?

If you already know some Python

Hugging Face is the clearest fit if you want to write code and compare libraries rather than stay with one vendor’s tools. Its stated prerequisites are basic Python and basic knowledge of large language models (LLMs). The course combines fundamentals with work in named frameworks, use cases, and an assignment.

Build-agents.dev may suit learners who want coding exercises in a browser. Its advertised Pyodide setup can reduce the need to configure a local Python environment, though that does not establish that every exercise or external service used in independent projects is cost-free.

If you prefer a reading-first introduction

DAIR.AI organizes agent concepts into text-based lessons. Its listed subjects move beyond definitions into planning, uncertainty, tools, memory, and context. The course page describes a certificate of completion, but the reviewed information does not establish how much hands-on programming it includes.

If you want interactive, vendor-specific training

Trailhead uses exercises, quizzes, and projects in Salesforce’s Agentforce context. That can be relevant if your goal is to understand or build within that ecosystem. If you want transferable practice across unrelated frameworks, weigh that vendor orientation against the broader library coverage listed by Hugging Face or the production themes advertised by other options.

If production systems are your priority

Cognizant Agent Academy and Build-agents.dev explicitly advertise topics associated with more than a first prototype: testing, observability, debugging, reliability, deployment, and scaling. Cognizant’s page also identifies integrations and production systems among its advanced themes. Treat the Cognizant curriculum’s advertised breadth carefully: the provider says only Agent Foundations is currently available, with further tracks and modules coming soon.

What to check before you enroll

  • Check the actual curriculum and live status. Course catalogs change, and Cognizant specifically marks some content as forthcoming. Confirm that the lessons you want are available before planning around them.
  • Match the course to your practice style. Hugging Face describes hands-on work in preconfigured Spaces and assignments; Salesforce lists interactive exercises, quizzes, and projects; Build-agents.dev advertises browser-based Python exercises. DAIR.AI is text-based.
  • Decide whether you want a framework or platform emphasis. Hugging Face names multiple libraries; Cognizant focuses practical development on Neuro San; Salesforce Trailhead is associated with Agentforce.
  • Check what a credential means to you. Hugging Face describes a free certification path, DAIR.AI lists a completion certificate, and Cognizant describes exam-based certifications. The pages reviewed do not establish a common accreditation standard across these credentials.

Does free course access mean building agents costs nothing?

No. The providers describe the courses as free, but that does not establish that every model, cloud service, or optional tool used for independent practice is free. The course information reviewed does not support a general claim that building or deploying agents has zero operating cost. Hugging Face specifies a computer with internet access, but not a particular laptop model or performance level; if you already have access to a suitable computer, the course page gives no reason to buy a new one.

How to choose among these options

  1. Pick your learning mode: choose DAIR.AI for a structured text course, or favor the options that describe exercises and assignments if you learn by doing.
  2. Match the platform to your goal: use the named frameworks in Hugging Face’s course for cross-library exposure; choose Salesforce or Cognizant if their respective ecosystem is relevant to your work.
  3. For production topics, verify availability: compare Cognizant’s and Build-agents.dev’s advertised material, and check Cognizant’s live catalog before expecting advanced tracks to be open.
  4. Choose the credential only after checking its purpose: distinguish a course completion certificate or provider certification from independent accreditation, which these pages do not establish as a shared standard.
