Emacs Solo is a personal Emacs configuration designed to make broad use of Emacs’s built-in features, with its setup split into small modules. It is a ready-to-study starting point—not a universal Emacs distribution. The project README, accessed October 3, 2026, says it requires Emacs 31.1 and documents launching it from a separate init directory.

What Emacs Solo is—and who it suits

The Emacs Solo README describes a fast, modular configuration that favors Emacs’s built-in facilities over third-party packages. The maintainer says the codebase is “over 3000 lines of code”; treat that as the project’s own description, not an independently audited count. “Minimalist” refers to its built-in-focused approach, not to a tiny codebase.

The maintainer states, “However, this is not intended to be a distribution.” The configuration reflects one person’s preferences and does not aim to anticipate every user’s workflow. For example, the README notes that it does not include Python-specific Eglot or Tree-sitter settings. It is most useful if you want to inspect and adapt a substantial Emacs setup, rather than install a preconfigured environment intended to cover every language and use case. Read the Emacs Solo repository README.

Emacs requirement and installation

As stated in the README accessed October 3, 2026, Emacs Solo requires the latest stable Emacs release, identified there as Emacs 31.1. This requirement can change, so check the README for the current version before setting up the configuration. Some bleeding-edge features may require compiling Emacs from the master branch; the README marks those sections with EMACS-32.

The documented launch command uses an existing Emacs installation. It does not install GNU Emacs.

  1. Clone the Emacs Solo repository, or copy init.el, early-init.el, and the lisp/ directory to a directory you choose.
  2. Replace YOUR_DIR with that directory’s path and run emacs --init-directory=YOUR_DIR.

Emacs starts with that directory as its configuration location, keeping it separate from your usual Emacs setup.

How the configuration is organized

The tracked files form two layers:

  • early-init.el handles setup that runs early in Emacs startup.
  • init.el contains core configuration and loads modules from lisp/.
  • lisp/ holds self-contained modules for reusable parts of the setup.

The README recommends leaving these upstream files unchanged if you want to pull updates without mixing personal edits into the project’s tracked configuration. Instead, Emacs Solo supports optional local files for customization:

  • custom-vars.el is managed by Emacs Customize.
  • private-early-init.el is for settings that need to run early, such as frame parameters, fonts, startup display colors, or garbage-collection tweaks.
  • private.el loads after startup, lazily on the first idle period. It is the intended place for most personal commands, keybindings, and optional package setup.

These files are optional and guarded so the configuration can run when they are absent. Keeping your changes in them separates local customization from the tracked files; it does not guarantee that every override will remain compatible with every future upstream change.

What you can do with the built-in-focused setup

The README describes workflows built around Emacs facilities, including completion, Flymake diagnostics, Dired, Eshell, version-control browsing, and news reading. Its examples show how that philosophy plays out:

  • Read news with built-in Gnus or Newsticker.
  • Use Dired with built-in query-replace to edit across marked files.
  • Browse version-control logs and diffs with Emacs commands.
  • Use viper, with project-specific extensions, for a vi-like editing mode.

These are workflows documented by the project, not independent tests. Emacs Solo also supports selected integrations that depend on external programs. Those programs are conditional requirements for particular features, not prerequisites for using the configuration as a whole.

Optional program Feature described by the README
ripgrep Faster project grep and xref navigation
Ghostscript PDF viewing through DocView
mpv Selected media playback
gh GitHub interface
Docker or Podman Container UI
Language or formatting tools Particular Flymake and formatting integrations

The README’s full optional-dependency list also includes gls, curl, wget, rsync, Ollama, Gemini CLI, Claude CLI, khard, yt-dlp, Biome, Prettier, shfmt, ESLint, LanguageTool, and rassumfrassum, each associated with a specific optional feature. Consult the README to identify the executable needed for the function you plan to use.

What to consider before adopting it

  • Fit matters: this is one maintainer’s configuration, and its language support may not match yours. The README’s Python example illustrates that gap.
  • Check the Emacs version: the stated stable requirement is version-sensitive, and some features may require a development build.
  • Expect to customize: its modular structure makes it inspectable, but it is still a substantial configuration rather than a universal setup tailored to every user.
  • Some features need other programs: built-in-focused does not mean every workflow is entirely self-contained.

The README splash displays “Loading time : 0.172725 seconds” and “Packages : 0”. Those are figures shown on the project page, not a controlled benchmark: the page provides no machine, test method, or comparison baseline, so they should not be used to predict your startup time or compare Emacs Solo with another configuration.
