People, including students, were injured, and swimming events were postponed. As of 3 October 2026, the reports cited here describe inquiries being opened or ordered, but do not establish responsibility or provide a reconciled injury total.
What happened at the Thrissur Aquatic Complex
During the State School Games in Thrissur, sheets from a temporary roof or seating structure at the aquatic complex reportedly came loose amid heavy rain and strong winds. People, including students, were injured, and swimming events were postponed. Onmanorama reported five injured athletes; a PTI dispatch carried by Hindustan Times described several people, including students, as injured without giving a definitive total. Those accounts do not establish a final injury count.
What Pinarayi Vijayan wants investigated
On 3 October, CPI(M) Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan criticised the state government and called for a comprehensive inquiry. He raised questions about whether an organising committee had been formed, whether the temporary structure had the necessary permissions, and whether safety rules were followed. These are allegations and questions attributed to Vijayan, not findings that establish negligence.
Vijayan also said the inquiry should examine parents’ reported concerns about food, drinking water, accommodation, medical care, notice of the postponement, and the adequacy of a reported ₹150 travel allowance. The report does not establish whether that amount was paid or whether participants were reimbursed.

Why accounts of the response conflict
Onmanorama reported two differing accounts of organising responsibility and the response to the weather:
- Sports Council district representative: The representative said the Kerala State Sports Council supplied the venue while the Education Department conducted the event. He alleged that no organising committee was formed, permission for temporary tin sheets was not sought, and safety officers’ advice to stop the swimming relay after lightning was not followed.
- Unnamed Education Department official: The official disputed that account, saying organisers stopped the relay when lightning began and had already moved some occupants before heavier rain and wind caused the sheets to fall.
The reports reviewed do not resolve these conflicting claims or establish the precise sequence of events and responsibility. An inquiry being ordered is not a finding of fault.

- Findings from the departmental inquiry or the child-rights commission’s proceedings.
- A revised date or venue for the postponed swimming events.
- Whether the reported ₹150 travel allowance was paid, or whether any reimbursement was made.
Until those details are confirmed, claims about negligence, amenities, permissions, and responsibility should be treated as allegations or attributed accounts rather than established conclusions.
