The biggest difference is how they sit on your ears: Galaxy Buds On is reported to use a clip-on, open-ear design that leaves the ear canal open, while Samsung describes Galaxy Buds4 as an open-fit earbud. Buds4 has clearly published battery estimates; Buds On’s reported 9.5-hour figure lacks comparable test details. As of October 3, 2026, Buds On’s launch information and availability remain subject to change.

How the designs and fit differ

Galaxy Buds On: a reported clip-on, open-ear format

TechRadar describes Buds On as clipping around the ear, with the speaker and battery balanced around it after Samsung studied ear shapes. In this design, the ear canal remains open. That makes its wearing concept distinct from a typical earbud that rests at the canal entrance, though the report is not a substitute for Samsung’s full final specification.

Galaxy Buds4: Samsung’s open-fit earbud

Samsung presents Buds4 as an open-fit model with an oblong metal blade and a computationally designed fit. “Open-fit” should not be conflated with Buds On’s reported clip-on arrangement: they are different physical approaches, and fit preference is personal. Samsung’s Buds4 page distinguishes the standard model from Buds4 Pro, which has silicone tips and a different audio configuration. Buds4 Pro’s canal-fit design and features are not Buds4 specifications.

Features and phone compatibility

What has been reported for Buds On

TechRadar reports TwinBoost speakers, automatic volume adjustment, audio-leakage reduction, touch controls, head gestures, voice commands and Galaxy AI use with a Samsung Galaxy phone. The report does not establish enough detail to make a definitive claim about the internal driver configuration or which features will work across all phones.

What Samsung documents for Buds4

Samsung lists pinch and swipe controls, Samsung Seamless Codec, Super Clear Call, and SSC UHQ support up to 24-bit/96 kHz on eligible Galaxy devices. These capabilities are not a guarantee of identical behavior on every handset: Samsung says some features are unavailable or vary on non-Samsung devices and can depend on market, operator or connected device. Check Samsung’s current feature-compatibility information against your specific phone and software before buying for a particular function.

Samsung also describes Buds4 Pro separately, including its two-way speaker, dual amplifier and silicone tips. Those Pro-only details should not be used to infer Buds4 performance or features.

Battery: the published figures are not a direct comparison

Buds4 estimates from Samsung

Samsung’s published Buds4 playback estimates are up to 5 hours per charge with ANC on and up to 6 hours with ANC off. Including case recharges, the estimates are up to 24 hours with ANC on and up to 30 hours with ANC off. Samsung says these are based on internal testing; actual playback varies with settings, use, charge cycles and Bluetooth signal. They are estimates, not guaranteed runtimes.

Buds On’s reported 9.5 hours

TechRadar reports Buds On battery life as “said to be 9.5 hours,” but does not provide an ANC condition, matching playback protocol or case-inclusive total. The figure therefore cannot establish that Buds On lasts longer than Buds4 in equivalent use. Treat it as a reported number pending fuller specifications.

Availability and what to confirm before choosing

As of October 3, 2026, TechRadar reports a planned October 27 South Korean release for Buds On at 299,000 won, with global availability later. Its converted prices for other currencies are not confirmed local prices, and the report says more detail is expected on the Korean release date. No global release date or confirmed US price is established here.

If you are considering Buds On, wait for Samsung’s final specifications and an actual local listing before comparing prices or buying. For Buds4, verify regional availability and whether the specific features you want are supported by your phone. The standard Buds4 and Buds4 Pro are different products, so confirm the model name on any listing.

Why clip-on open-ear earbuds are drawing attention

The format is part of a broader category trend, not evidence that one specific model is better. Omdia reported open wireless stereo shipments of 11.1 million units in the second quarter of 2026, up 12% year over year; the category represented 13.5% of total true wireless stereo shipments, compared with 12.0% a year earlier. Clip-on models accounted for 61% of open wireless stereo shipments in that quarter. These are market figures, not product-quality or listening-test results. (Omdia, September 17, 2026)
