Yes. Taco Bell uses voice AI to take drive-thru orders at more than 890 U.S. units across 38 states, according to Restaurant Dive’s July 7, 2026 report. That is a broad rollout, not an announcement that every Taco Bell has AI ordering. Yum Brands first said the system was active at more than 100 U.S. drive-thrus in 13 states in July 2024; the later expansion has involved more than one AI initiative and technology partner.
How widely is Taco Bell using drive-thru AI?
The latest reported footprint is more than 890 Taco Bell units in 38 states. Restaurant Dive reported that figure on July 7, 2026, alongside news that Taco Bell had expanded its partnership with voice-AI provider Omilia. Omilia’s own April 2026 case study also described its system as operating in more than 890 U.S. Taco Bell stores. These are reported deployment counts, not a claim that all Taco Bell locations use AI.
The rollout has changed over time, and company targets should not be mistaken for verified results:
| Date | What was announced or reported | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| July 31, 2024 | Yum said voice AI was already operating at more than 100 Taco Bell U.S. drive-thrus in 13 states, with hundreds of locations targeted by year-end. | The footprint was a reported current count; the year-end figure was a target, not proof the target was met. Yum Brands announcement |
| March 18, 2025 | Yum announced NVIDIA-related AI pilots at select Taco Bell and Pizza Hut U.S. locations and planned a broader 500-restaurant rollout across Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC and Habit Burger for Q2 2025. | The 500-restaurant rollout was planned; the announcement does not establish that it was completed. Yum Brands announcement |
| August 2025 | Restaurant Dive later reported Yum slowed and reconsidered deployment after customer complaints and people abusing the order-taking system. | This was a reported rethink, not evidence that Taco Bell abandoned voice AI or that a particular error rate was measured. Restaurant Dive report |
| April–July 2026 | Omilia cited more than 890 Taco Bell U.S. stores in its April case study; Restaurant Dive reported more than 890 units across 38 states in July. | The vendor and trade-publication accounts establish the reported scale, not independent performance results. Omilia case study |
What does the AI do when you place an order?
The system uses a voice interaction at the drive-thru to take orders. Omilia’s case study describes speech recognition and language understanding, noise filtering, adapting to real-time menu and stock changes, and handling accents, slang, humor and order modifications. These are descriptions from the vendor; the cited material does not provide an independent benchmark of how reliably the system handles each situation.

Taco Bell’s drive-thru experience also includes other digital systems. Yum’s 2024 announcement situated voice AI alongside digital menu boards, the company’s Poseidon point-of-sale system and Taco Bell Rewards. The 2025 NVIDIA announcement covered a distinct set of initiatives, including voice agents, computer vision for restaurant operations and analytics, using NVIDIA Riva and NVIDIA NIM microservices within Yum’s Byte by Yum! technology platform. The available announcements do not establish that the NVIDIA and Omilia deployments are the same system.
Why is Taco Bell using AI for orders?
Yum says the aim is to ease employees’ task load, support more consistent and friendly service, improve order accuracy, reduce wait times and support profitable growth. In its 2024 announcement, Taco Bell digital and technology chief Dane Mathews said AI could free team members to focus on hospitality. Those are the company’s stated goals, not demonstrated effects: the cited announcements do not provide independent measurements of changes in accuracy, wait time, customer satisfaction, staffing or sales.

Have there been problems with Taco Bell’s AI ordering?
Yes, deployment has faced reported friction. Restaurant Dive said Yum slowed and reconsidered rollout in August 2025 after customer complaints and people abusing the ordering system with extreme orders. That report does not quantify complaints or establish an error rate. Restaurant Dive also reported in July 2026 that Taco Bell remained committed to expanding voice AI and worked with a range of providers; its account describes a pause and rethink during continuing adoption, not a complete retreat.
Omilia’s April 2026 case study says transaction time was on par with or better than human order-taking and that early indicators showed lower turnover and sales and transactions on par with or better than non-AI stores. Those are vendor-reported claims without numerical effect sizes in the case study, so they should not be treated as independently verified results.

What should customers expect at a Taco Bell drive-thru?
Whether an order is handled by voice AI depends on the location: the reported footprint is extensive but not universal. The cited sources do not specify a customer-facing way to identify AI-enabled lanes in advance, guarantee that every order is completed without staff involvement, or describe a standard human-handoff policy. The sources also do not establish a single nationwide system or provide a direct, independently measured comparison among Taco Bell’s technology providers.
