Their stated goal was to make combat feel more physical without making it gratuitously gross. That is the design rationale reported by Gamer24H—not proof that every player will find the effect successful.
Why the developers say E-Day needed more visceral violence
In a report published October 3, 2026, Gamer24H attributes the rationale to art director Aryan Hanbeck: “We had this feeling that fans were getting a bit desensitised to the violence in Gears, because you’re just going around doing all sorts of stuff and blood was a little more stylised in the past few games.” Hanbeck said the team wanted players to “feel every single kill” by making the game “a bit more realistic”—but “not enough for you to get grossed out.” Gamer24H’s report

That is the developers’ perception of how the series’ violence was landing, not a measured finding about Gears fans as a group. No study or audience data supporting a broader desensitisation claim is cited in the report. The exact remarks are also not independently confirmed by the available Xbox podcast transcript, so they should be understood as Gamer24H’s attribution to Hanbeck.
What the reported “investment in gore” means in combat
Creative director Matt Searcy is quoted in the same Gamer24H report as saying, “There’s a big investment in gore in this game. That’s a huge aspect of what makes combat so satisfying.” Hanbeck’s account gives that investment a practical shape: he describes the visual effects of a headshot, the audio, the height of blood spurts, the amount of mist, and what the body does afterward. In that description, gore is part of the feedback loop around a hit or kill: sound and visible consequences help make an action register. The stated limit matters as much as the ambition. Hanbeck framed the target as grounded impact, not maximum disgust. The comments describe an intention; without hands-on testing or representative audience research, they cannot establish how well that balance works for different players.
Where E-Day fits in the Gears story
Xbox describes Gears of War: E-Day as an origin-story campaign set fourteen years before the original Gears of War. It follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde first emerges.
