Microsoft Defender SmartScreen is a reputation-based security feature in Windows and Microsoft Edge. It checks websites and internet downloads against threat reports and reputation signals, then warns or blocks when something is known to be dangerous or has too little reputation information. An unfamiliar-file warning is a reason to pause and verify—not proof that the file is malware.
What is SmartScreen in Windows?
SmartScreen helps protect against phishing and malware websites, potentially malicious downloads, and unsafe apps. Microsoft describes it as a service that checks visited websites against dynamic lists of reported phishing and malicious-software sites and evaluates apps and files downloaded from the web. Its warnings are based on reputation and reported threat information, not a guarantee that every item has been individually identified as malware. What does Windows Defender SmartScreen do?
Checks website reputation
SmartScreen analyzes webpages for suspicious behavior and checks site addresses against reported phishing and malicious-software sites. A website warning can reflect URL reputation, page content, file behavior, TLS security, user feedback, or dynamic behavior; no single factor is a guaranteed predictor of a warning. Microsoft details these factors in its website warning troubleshooting guidance.
Checks apps and downloads
For web downloads, SmartScreen considers whether a file or its source is associated with reported malicious activity and whether the download is well known and frequent. Edge documentation says reputation can also draw on download traffic and history, past antivirus results, and URL reputation. A widely downloaded file with established reputation may not trigger a warning. An unfamiliar program may be flagged because it lacks reputation history, even when it is not malicious. Microsoft explicitly cautions that not all unknown programs are malicious in its Edge SmartScreen documentation (updated July 8, 2026).

How it differs from other Windows protections
SmartScreen is not synonymous with Smart App Control or Exploit Protection. Windows Security lists these as distinct areas under App & browser control; Smart App Control is not available in Windows 10. See Microsoft’s App & browser control guide for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Where are the SmartScreen settings?
| Control | Where to find it | Documented scope | Who may control it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows reputation-based protection | Windows Security > App & browser control > Reputation-based protection > Check apps and files | Evaluation of apps and files downloaded from the web | User setting unless organization policy manages it |
| Microsoft Edge SmartScreen | Edge Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Security. Microsoft also documents edge://settings/privacy. |
Edge website and download checks | User setting unless Group Policy or MDM manages it |
Settings names and placement can change between versions. If a control is unavailable or shows that it is managed, your work or school organization may have set the policy. Microsoft documents the Windows setting in its Windows Security instructions and Edge controls in its SmartScreen help page.

How do I turn off SmartScreen in Windows 11?
- Open Windows Security.
- Select App & browser control, then Reputation-based protection.
- Review Check apps and files. This is the Windows setting for SmartScreen checks on apps and files downloaded from the web.
Turning off this control reduces that layer of checking. It does not turn off every Windows security feature, and it does not change Edge’s separate SmartScreen setting. If the control is managed by your organization, do not try to override it; contact your IT administrator.
How do I turn off SmartScreen in Edge?
- In Microsoft Edge, open Settings.
- Go to Privacy, search, and services > Security.
- Review the Microsoft Defender SmartScreen setting.
The Edge control is separate from Windows Security’s Check apps and files. If the setting is unavailable or managed, Group Policy or mobile device management (MDM) may be enforcing your organization’s choice. Administrators can also configure whether users may bypass website or download warnings; Microsoft’s SmartScreen settings guidance describes those controls.

What should I do when SmartScreen warns about a file?
Treat a warning as a prompt to verify the download, especially if you did not expect it. Before deciding whether to proceed:
- Check that you obtained the file from the intended publisher’s official website, not an unexpected link or third-party download page.
- Confirm that you meant to download and run the file.
- Inspect the publisher and digital-signature information if it is available, and make sure it matches the publisher you expected.
- If you cannot establish that the download is legitimate, do not run it.
A reputation warning for an unknown file does not establish that the file is malware. Conversely, the absence of a SmartScreen warning is not proof that a file is safe.

Why is SmartScreen blocking a safe file or website?
Reputation systems can flag something that its owner believes is safe. A site’s URL reputation, page content, downloads, TLS security, feedback, and changing behavior can all contribute to a website warning. A legitimate but little-known download may also lack the history needed to establish a strong reputation.
If a website warning seems mistaken, Microsoft documents a reporting option from the warning page and a route to report an unsafe site through Edge. For a file or app you believe has been incorrectly warned on or blocked, submit it to Microsoft for review and select Microsoft Defender SmartScreen in the product menu. Start with Microsoft’s website warning guidance, Edge SmartScreen documentation, and Edge SmartScreen help. Keep treating the warning cautiously while it is reviewed.

For site owners, Microsoft recommends using HTTPS with a valid certificate and securing site content and behavior. These steps address factors Microsoft lists; they do not guarantee that a warning will never appear.
Can work or school settings override SmartScreen?
Yes. Administrators can use Group Policy or Intune/MDM to enable SmartScreen and control whether people can bypass certain website and download warnings. A missing or locked setting on a managed device may therefore be intentional. Microsoft recommends that organizations block high-risk interactions rather than merely warn and allow a bypass. If this is a work or school device, ask the administrator about a policy you cannot change.
What does SmartScreen check, and what does it not cover?
Microsoft says SmartScreen protects against malicious files from the internet, but does not protect against malicious files on internal locations or network shares, including UNC and SMB/CIFS shares. It is one security layer, not a complete safety guarantee.
Microsoft’s Edge documentation says Edge sends relevant URL or file information to the SmartScreen service for reputation checks over TLS, and that results are stored locally on the device. Microsoft also says the service stores reputation-check data to maintain its threat intelligence. The documentation does not specify that exactly the same information is transmitted in every check.
