No. Downloading cracked software is not a safe choice. A crack or key generator comes from outside the publisher’s normal licensing channel, so you cannot rely on its source or contents. Malware has been distributed through illicit apps, but the available evidence here does not establish what percentage of cracked desktop downloads contain malware. Using cracks to bypass licensing can also create legal risk; the example discussed below is specific to the United States.

Why cracked software is risky

You cannot verify the source the way you can an authorized download

A crack or key generator is a tool obtained outside a software publisher’s normal licensing process. You may not know who created or modified it, what else it does, or whether the file is the version it claims to be. That uncertainty is a practical security concern, even though it does not prove that a particular file contains malware.

Malware can put more than one device or account at risk

The Federal Trade Commission warns that malware delivered through illegal video-streaming apps and add-ons can spread to other devices on a wireless network and may expose payment information, login credentials, photos, and other personal data. That warning concerns illicit streaming apps and add-ons; it is not a measured infection rate for cracked desktop software. The FTC’s guidance is available in its consumer alert on illegal streaming apps.

There is no reliable infection-rate figure here

Marketplace size is not the same as the likelihood that a software crack contains malware. In a January 2025 announcement, updated April 25, the U.S. Department of Justice said the Cracked marketplace had more than four million users and 28 million posts, and that it had affected at least 17 million U.S. victims. The same announcement reported more than five million users, 43 million posts, and about $1 million in yearly revenue for Nulled. Those figures describe the marketplaces and their alleged activity—not the number or proportion of cracked software downloads infected with malware. See the DOJ marketplace seizure announcement.

Cracked downloads versus legitimate options

The sources do not provide measured comparative rates for these options. The practical distinction is that an authorized download comes through a publisher or approved channel, while a crack does not.

Factor Cracked download Publisher or authorized download
Source Obtained outside the publisher’s normal licensing path; the source and any modifications may be difficult to verify. Obtained from the publisher or an authorized channel.
License Typically used to bypass licensing or activation. Used with a valid license, or through a legitimate free tier, trial, or alternative where available.
Updates and support Access and eligibility are not established by the sources cited here; do not assume normal publisher support. Availability depends on the software, license, and publisher’s terms.
Malware or unwanted software Risk cannot be quantified for desktop cracks from the sources cited here; an untrusted file may contain more than the advertised program. The authorized channel avoids relying on an unknown crack source, but no download route should be treated as an absolute security guarantee.
Cost May appear to avoid a license payment, but can carry security and legal risks. Depends on the named application and region. Check its current official options.

Can using a crack lead to legal trouble?

Yes, it can create legal risk, but the law and enforcement depend on jurisdiction and circumstances. A U.S. federal case illustrates why bypassing licensing should not be treated as harmless: on September 16, 2021, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Eastern District of New York reported that three employees pleaded guilty to criminal copyright infringement after installing unlicensed software using cracks or key generators. Their company separately entered a deferred prosecution agreement involving a charge under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The DOJ described the relevant DMCA provision as prohibiting criminal circumvention of copyright-protection systems, including encryption systems. This is a U.S.-specific example, not proof that every user in every country faces the same consequences. Read the DOJ account of the 2021 case.

A separate U.S. case concerns standalone Microsoft Certificates of Authenticity labels and product keys, not the malware risk of cracked software. In March 2026, the DOJ reported sentencing a distributor in a conspiracy involving illicit labels and keys, and described federal restrictions on trafficking in those labels separately from the software they were meant to accompany. That case is not evidence that a crack contains malware. See the DOJ release on the label case.

What to do if you already downloaded a crack

  1. If it has not been opened, do not run it. Avoid launching the crack, key generator, or installer. Remove the file using your operating system’s usual method and obtain the software through the publisher or an authorized channel.
  2. If it ran or you suspect malware, update your security software and scan. The FTC recommends updating security software and running a scan if malware is on a computer. A scan is a response step, not a guarantee that every threat will be detected or removed.
  3. Escalate if there are signs of compromise or sensitive data is involved. Follow current incident-response instructions from your operating-system or security-software vendor, or consult a qualified technician—particularly if the device holds financial, work, or other sensitive information.

How to get the software without a crack

  • Download directly from the publisher or an authorized distributor, and use a valid license.
  • If price is the obstacle, check whether that specific publisher offers a legitimate free tier, trial, or lower-cost plan in your region.
  • Consider an open-source or lower-cost substitute only after checking that it supports your platform and the features you need.
  • Do not treat a standalone activation key or label from an unknown seller as equivalent to a valid license. Confirm licensing through the publisher or an authorized seller.
